I have a gut feeling this Whiteside kid won't be around at 14th, after all those camps and practice with teams.
I agree. When teams are in doubt, they grab a big with potential. This guy's game reminds me somewhat of Yao. He's very slight with good mechanics on his jumpshot. That would be one reason to pick him. Looks like you could run everything but the low post sets the same as Yao.
I agree that the measurements, workouts and interviews are more important to Whiteside than for the average draftee. It all can also go the other way, though. Take for example DeAndre Jordan, who fell all the way to the second round. He and Whiteside are in many ways remarkably similar. http://www.draftexpress.com/profile/DeAndre-Jordan-1072/mock-draft-history/ Obviously DeAndre Jordan has performed better than expected since but It seems majority of the GM's felt there were lots of risks involved. (Now that I mentioned DJ, leebigez will of course pop out with one of his I told you so -posts )
thats not just a gut feeling, thats a good educated guess. once camps, combines, and workouts are through, you will see the players with "potential" start to rise above the guys who are ready to contribute now but have lower ceilings.
