Just got done reading this badass piece on Barrow, Alaska, where ESPN is following the team around in their first ever season. Barrow, the northern-most point in Alaska is plagued by alcohol and drug problems, leading to awful graduation rates. Football is supposed to bring the town some hope, and give the high schoolers something to rally around. http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/eticket/story?page=tundra Here's Part I
Football requires nearby medical treatment sometimes. I wonder if the State of Alaska paid for their doctor's education under the agreement that the city of Barrow have him as an indentured servant for 4 years.
I would imagine there are decent medical facilities there since there are so many oil workers in the area. They must have the ability to deal with work-related injuries. Believe it or not, my uncle is actually a teacher near there.
that field that they play on is gnarly. its like a dirt field with scattered rocks on it. i guess they really really really want to have football up there.
Speaking of Alaska.. The Tube Channel 51 shows Northern Exposure reruns. What a great, forgotten show that is.
