I have hard time buying Dallas playing D. I just cannot imagine it. You have JT, Dirk, they dont play D. To me you added some defensive players but will the mix work?

Mr. Delusional Mavs Fan, what you just said is one of the most insanely idiotic things that I have ever heard. At no point in your rambling, incoherent reponse were you even close to anything that can be considered a rational thought. Everyone on this BBS is now dumber for having listened to it. I award you no points, and may God have mercy on your soul...

So you did not like finley anymore, but you do think christie will improve your team.??
Finley was an importent player for your team. He was the te person that gave Dirk a chance to shine and be the man on the team. Finley is selfless, and a good shooter. He can still play a little defense(better then Christie).
Can you explain what you think christie will bring for your team? and do you think he will start?

i think a lot of you guys are overestimating the demise of the Mavs.
Last year, I along with a lot of you guys thought they'd be much worse after losing Nash. This year they lose an aging Finley and they're going to be much worse? It just means more time for their younger guards. Dallas will be pretty good next year, not as good as the Rockets!

I think that the Mavs losing Finley is like the Rockets not having Mario Elie in '94 and '95. He's that guy that just goes out there and does what it takes to win...he's the "x-factor", to borrow an old cliche...He's one of those guys that you don't really notice until he's gone. Mavwreck fans will miss him a lot more than they realize...

It's tempting to now somehow dismiss Dallas because we all hate them so much, and Finley in particular. Fin was, however, rapidly becoming obsolete on the team he built. I mean, his finest moment in the playoffs was stealing the ball from out of bounds.

The Mavericks having to find minutes for that manbitch Christie can only be good for the Rockets, though.

I don't know why you guys think Finley's an important player to our team. To compare him to Mario Elie is a huge insult.

For starters, he could handle the ball and function as a second point guard on the floor, freeing up Terry for shots; Finley can't do that because he's a terrible ballhandler. If his 'bone spurs' story is true, then I expect his movement on defense to improve. He can also score and bring pretty much the same veteran presence that Finley's paid $15-million to do.

Christie is a terrible shooter especially when it comes to clutch situations. Just ask Sacramento fans. What little Christie will bring on the defensive end will not be enough to compensate for the hole he will create on offense. Teams will sag off of him and close the lanes.

I think finley was an importent player for the mavs, he was a leader(atleast IMHO). he might not be the youngest guy out there, but he was good. i understand that he was overpaid the last year. However i do not think that christie has anything left anymore, i do nto think christie will start. So you lost a starter for a bench player, imho that is not going forward.

Very insightful post, thank you. The key for the Mavs is they didn't shake the team up too much this season. A little contiuity sometimes goes a long way. Marquis, Christi, and Stackhouse will likley split Finley's role to a large extent next season.

Contrary to what Mavs fans think, they don't really have the pieces to get a superstar anymore.

They have KVH and his tasty expiring deal, but remember that that number of teams with interest in those is very limited. Most teams ate their expiring contracts last season. Yes, there was the Baron Davis trade, but with BShiddy's bad back AND knees AND his uninsured max deal... that was an incredible risk on the Warriors' part.

Expiring contracts typically net players like Tim Thomas or Keith Van Horn. But in the end... you wind up with Tim Thomas or Keith Van Horn. Better to just bite the bullet and let 'em expire.

On the other hand, they think that by packaging KVH and a few other pieces (any combination of Devin Harris, Pavel Podkolzin, Marquis Daniels, Jason Terry or DJ MBenga) they will net a player like Paul Pierce. But the league-wide interest in those particular players is small. Here's why

    - IMO Harris was a reach for a top-five pick in last year's draft, and the Vegas summer leagues confirmed my suspicions that he isn't anything special. He has poor fundamentals and doesn't do anything particularly well. He was demolished on both ends of the floor by Delonte West.
-Podkolzin is a gimmick prospect IMO
-Daniels was given a bad contract, he isn't very young and he isn't better than what most teams have on the wings, especially the Celtics
-Jason Terry would be a rental, since his contact expires... no thanks
-MBenga is intriguing, but he ain't worth a talent like Pierce

So they'd be willing to part with Josh Howard, IF a player like Pierce is available for sixty cents on the dollar. And even if they got him, they still wouldn't be a serious contender, though it would help. So it looks like the Mavs are becoming the Dirk Nowitzki show, with an increasingly lackluster cadre of supporting players.

And I don't think Christie is an adequate replacement for Finley. Even though Finley had gone from being one of the most athletic, physical guards in basketball to being a jump-shooter because of age, he was still an important pierce. At this point, Christie has a giant fork sticking out of his back.
