    nonsense
it has nothing to do with dunking, showboating etc
Dwight over Yao coz he's miles ahead of Yao on D. its not even close.
Yao is only effective scoring while Dwight dominates both ends.
Yes you're right, Dwight's more atheltic, and that's why he's a better player than Yao.
    i'm sorry. end of story.

I remember seeing this in the game. The highlight is there because it was a critical 2-pointer which tied the game between the nuggets and rockets.

I do agree, though, that everybody is obsessed w/ hating on Yao.

Can you go wrong with either? I don't blame the majority for picking Dwight. Look at the numbers he puts up and look at their records. It doesn't matter if hes in the East or the fact that injuries have been holding the Rockets back. All those are part of the game of basketball. To say either one is clearly better than the other is absurd.

I likw Yao, but if I was starting a team, I'd take howard over yao. Why? Age,production, and need. This is the same tired debate, but Howard is on the verge of doing something that hasn't been done since Hakeem in the 90's. 20pts 14rebs and 4 blks. How can u argue with that and his team is winning.

in the 2 games he's gotten significant minutes because of Dwight being out, this Marcin Gortat fellow is also averaging 3.5 bpg and nearly double digit boards.

Probably just a short-term fluke, and Dwight is clearly the better rebounder and shot-blocker than Yao, but I think it is also clear that he is in a system that lends itself to 1 big man dominating those stats (whereas the Rockets, as an example, actually have more team rebounds per game than the Magic despite no one averaging over 10 a game).

also, Yao is underrated defensively. He has one problem area defensively, and it's a big one, which is guarding the pick and roll. But regardless of Dwight's extra couple blocks per game, Yao is as good at defending the paint as anyone in the league - you just have to watch the games to see that..

just some thoughts. i would take Dwight over Yao to anchor a team today. But I think Yao is the better center right now. I would not feel comfortable going to Dwight on the post in a must-score scenario late in the game. I would Yao. But, as mentioned above, on the defensive end, having Yao out there at the end of the game guarding something like a Boozer/Okur setting a pick for Deron Williams puts you at a disadvantage, and while most of those Game 7 rebounds a few years back against the Jazz in the fourth quarter were just the way the ball bounced, I have to think Dwight's athleticism allows him to get or tip one or two of them, which could have saved the game. Again, though, alternatively, Yao was 11-13 from the line, had 29 points that game...Dwight wouldn't have done that. You can go back and forth all day.

The thing that seals it for me is (i) you can go to Yao in the post offensively and run the entire offense that way, with Yao getting double or triple teamed, and (ii) Yao still wins head to head match-ups with Dwight regularly.

but that strategy has been failed again and again. See all those 4th quarter collapses since JVG era.

Yao is the best center on paper,no doubt. However, his lack of fire, health, concentration, consistence, stamina, and effort basically offsets all of his skills.

Don't worry about ESPN polls. All they care about are flashy dunks, superman, and other lame ****. They should put Yao's stats vs Dwight's in there.

Also, Yao is soft compared to Dwight and not black.

SO you are saying that Isaiah Rider, Jr(who won the dunk contest) is better than larry bird based on athleticism?

    NICE ONE??!!

JayZ750 hit the nail right on the head. If you watch Orlando play, you will clearly see that they are a sub-par rebounding team. They are outrebounded by their opponents on a nightly basis, while Dwight is getting 14-15 rebounds. The structure of their team, and the system they run allows Dwight to take almost all the uncontested rebounds available. Rashard Lewis, a natural SF, is their PF.
If you put Dwight on a good rebounding team with a legit PF, his numbers would go down tremendously. And in that scenario, would anyone still be drooling over his gawdy stats?

This is becoming ridiculous. It's not even a legitimate critique anymore. People throw it out for anyone and anything. Just because Yao hasn't won he lacks fire?

Anyways, most fans (like 99%) that don't really watch basketball on a regular basis think Dwight pwns Yao because they see the monster stats and the dunks and the flashy moves. And all they ever see of Yao is getting dunked on, like by Randolph, and by Nene, etc.

    Pretty sad.

    how quickly we forget...

    Howard: 13 pts, 9 rebounds, 5 fouls
Yao: 22 pts, 13 rebounds, and the victory

And for the people who say that Dwight is a way better defender than Yao, how can a 7' 6" guy not be a good defender? Can you think of any center dominating Yao in recent memory? Dwight will get more blocks, but Yao is still a good defender in his own right. Just look at the last game: Nene (a season 60% shooter) was held to 5-14 shooting. And for good measure:

    <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/RtRssX5PmYs&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/RtRssX5PmYs&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>

Don't worry too much about that poll. The rest of the nation is just brainwashed by BSPN.

Es** does not practice a true democracy, they're a Walt backed regime, thus their polls have no credibility.

What skills are you talking about? Are you talking about skills that can be learned? If Yao's able to possess those skills through learning howcome Dwight can't? IF Dwight can develop the type of skills Yao has on the offensive end he will be the best center hands down.. but at this moment I would take Yao any day over DHoward.

I think with yao u can only play 1 style and u need more componets. Do anyone on this board think the magic can win 67% of their games without howard? Someone also mentioned the magic as a whole being a poor rebounding team which allows him to grab rebounds. If that's the case, how do u explain barkley avg 11 rebs per when he had dream, clyde, and willis? If u can rebound, u can rebound. Its not like yao is fighting rodman for rebounds.

It's hard to blame all those instances on one player in particular wether it be Tracy or Yao. Especially when the other teams defense can collapse on Yao because the rest of the team can't knock down a jumper. Let me ask you this, who is the Magics leading scorer in the fourth quarter? Who does Ron Jeremy want to have the ball in his hands in crunchtime? Here's a hint, it's not Dwight.
