Figures that there would be so many teams without coaches when the Rockets decide to push Rudy out, leading to these ridiculous bidding wars.

If Van Gundy decides to sign with the Rockets he’s a much bigger man than I would be. Giving up 10 million dollars, 2% ownership, plus more power is a pretty hefty price to pay to coach the Rockets. I'm surprised it's taken him this long to decide. Pretty much any other coach would have been heading to Washington by now.

    From ESPN:

The Wizards have a five-year deal worth approximately $25 million on the table for Van Gundy to accept. According to ESPN sources, the former Knicks coach would not have the general manager's title in Washington, but would have significant say in personnel.

If Washington isn't even offering JVG the GM job, then I seriously doubt that there's any ownership included. Five years, $25M is in the ball park with what I'd expect Van Gundy to be offered by the Rockets.

all i have to say is if les loses out to washington we do not need to complain. If they are offering ownership no owner should be expected to give that to any coach.

Just our luck that he's visiting in June.

Come check out DC, Jeff. It rained all weekend and the rest of the week is going to be a sauna.

No, but 2% ownership in a team would be really hard to pass up. If that's the case, I'd call him an idiot if he didn't take that offer.

Honestly, I am not sure "weather" is the overall determining factor. It probably has more to do with amenities (what the city has to offer) than anything else. In terms of "cities", the one thing Washington has on Houston is it is closer to NY which is where the Van Gundy's are from.

In terms of franchises, there isn't even a choice here, Houston by a mile!

Bottom line...if Van Gundy chooses Washington it is going to be more about his family and their comfortability and probably not as much about money or power.

I agree with you Deuce, if Van Gundy decides to coach in Houston - it would be worth it, especially with the sweetened pot Washington is offering. Madison Square Garden's highest ever recorded attendance was the night Houston Rockets played on Feb 25th and the following night when Patrick Ewing's jersey was raised to the rafters.

Knicks to seek compensation if Van Gundy gets a job
    By FRANK ISOLA
    New York Daily News

NEW YORK - The New York Knicks are not about to give Jeff Van Gundy away for nothing.

Van Gundy's former employer wants compensation in the form of a draft pick or money if the coach ends up in either Houston or Washington, a league source told the New York Daily News.

The Knicks, who own Van Gundy's rights until July 31, asked the Rockets for a second-round pick and a guarantee of at least two exhibition games that would bring Houston center Yao Ming to Madison Square Garden.

The compensation issue could be moot if Van Gundy turns down both Houston and Washington. Van Gundy is expected to make a decision today or tomorrow. Van Gundy, who was holed up in his Westchester home yesterday debating his future, is also considering returning to television for another season as an analyst for TNT.

The Knicks' insistence on compensation is not expected to be a deal breaker, but it could delay an announcement. It also illustrates the bitterness the team still feels toward Van Gundy, who resigned 19 games into the 2001-02 season.

By comparison, Philadelphia did not ask the Pistons for compensation for Larry Brown after he resigned with two years left on his contract and, within one week, accepted Detroit's head coaching job.

The Knicks granted teams permission to contact Van Gundy, who interviewed with Cleveland, Houston and Washington. Van Gundy turned down the opportunity to meet with team officials from Philadelphia and New Orleans.

Last week, Van Gundy and his wife, Kim, met with Rockets officials in Houston. The Rockets job is appealing because with Ming and point guard Steve Francis, Houston has two of the best young stars in the league. The team is also moving into a new downtown arena.

Washington is a rebuilding project, but owner Abe Pollin is willing to give Van Gundy the power to make personnel decisions. According to one report, Washington could present a deal worth $35 million over five years with a small percentage of the team.

Joining the Wizards would also allow Van Gundy to remain in the Eastern Conference. But Washington is a perennial loser whose best player, Michael Jordan, just retired.

The biggest decision for Van Gundy, according to his close friends, is whether he even wants to return to coaching. He has said repeatedly that he enjoys living in the New York area - Chappaqua - and that uprooting his wife and daughter would be difficult.

That is why people close to Van Gundy are not ruling out him returning to TNT, where Van Gundy is under contract through next season.

ok so if they want a second and two appearances by yao what will they want from washington? yao will generate them a ton of cash when he visits so what will they tell washington to send them.

A second round pick? Both teams would probably just wait till July 31st to sign the deal outright than give up a second round pick.

This is what I would think. Granted, this would almost definitely mean that there could be no work actually done by Van Gundy specifically for the Rockets during this period (such as the draft), but I don't see this as a problem, especially given that he could certainly start looking at tape/etc. on his own.

It be in the Rockets best interest to say we'll give you the games, but not the pick - take it, or take nothing and we'll risk not having his knowledge for our pick (what is it, 40 something?)

The Rockets are starting to look bad, actually we've Bungled this coach search from the beginning. So here's the thing, if it's going to take Van Gundy a weekend to think about it, after the Roxs org. rolled out the red carpet last week, then you know what, we don't want him and we don't need him. If he wants to coach Kwame "Crybaby" Brown and Jerry "Michael Jordan hurt my feelings" Stackhouse instead of Yao Ming and Stevie Franchise, then hell, he can have it. The Rox's need to show some testicular fortitude(sp), they have the best job available and limiting yourself to these retreads is only going to hurt the org. in the future. I just hope that in the end it all turns out like the Notre Dame coaching situation back in 2002.
