B.S. is a rather impressive player. He can be more impressive in Rockets.

What so you what every position to be a mismatch? You think the other teams dont worry enough about how to matchup with Yao and T-mac? I can't believe everyone here wants a "stud" pf because everyone else has one. Trust me whenever we play a team I am positive they will be more worrying about how to play us with Yao and T-mac than JVG would about them with a few exceptions of course. Outside of the suns, heat I cant really think of a team with two top 15 guys who demand double teams everytime they get the ball. And I dont know about even those two teams since Shaq is in his decline and Yao can matchup with him easy now and the suns thats really only if amare returns to pre surgery form which has yet to be seen.

I know we have to see what the other team has but dont forget about our own strengths and take them for granted

EXACTLY. USA was leding 89 vs 86 with less than 30 seconds to go. It was Battier's no-nonsense tackle that created a turnover from the Brazillian point guard to lose the ball, and in the hussle, Joe Johnson was adjudged to be fouled. Made 1 free throw, and purposedly missed the second....Therefore USA won 90 ~ 86.

If not for Battier's contribution, the Brazillians could have a beat-the-buzzer 3-pointer to tie the game.

You are making an assumption that Gay is worth a damn. Time will tell.

Oh, and I'd bet some teams spend a couple minutes before the game trying to figure out how to match up with Yao and TMac. Just a hunch.

Santiago is 7 foot 1 and 255 now. If Battier could hold his own against centers of that size then the Rockets would REALLY have them something and he'd give versality a new name.

Well it's not like anyone can defend Dirk... but yeah, I agree that was a disappointing effort by Shane to guard Dirk, Dirk totally ripped him up, and got d'ed up by Posey and Haslem in the Finals...I don't think anyone can really guard Dirk, it's whether he gets his jumpers or not, sometimes he will still play amazing with a hand in his face...

I believe Shane was guarding Yi Jianlian for a while in the China game, and did a pretty darn good job...

just wait till the season starts to make any deep assumptions. i dont really know if the trade for battier was worth it, but all we can really do is wait until the season unfolds and we'll see how everything turns out.

I'm not taking the fact that we have Yao and Tmac for granted. I feel that the more potential mismatches we have to our advantage, the better. Remember game 7 against Dallas? Yao and Tmac got their points, nobody else did.

Let me point out that it ISN'T Battier's fault that he was traded here. It was our pathetic management's fault. So I don't hold a grudge against him. I hold a grudge against CD and Morey.

This isn't to say that Battier isn't a good roleplayer. I think he is one. The whole issue is that we could have gotten better. First let me say, no, I don't care for the technicalities some throws around here. Memphis may have been trading for the 8th pick, well guess what, it doesn't matter one goddam bit. WE lost Rudy Gay. And Gay and Swift should fetch us MORE than Shane Battier.

Yes, I do like his hustle. I do like his D. I do like the fact that he can hit the occasional outside jumper when none of our team can hit the broad side of the barn on any given day. But it doesn't matter. Rudy Gay is younger, has potential and I think worth the risk. Management is stupid to think they can win now with Battier. They can't.

    End rant.

looks like the threadstarter was a little premature in his assessment.

to battier's credit, he only played ten minutes.

Forgotten 'The Germanator' already have we??

Come on now, we were all in love with Rybo for about 5 minutes there during those playoffs, when it almost looked like JVG's plan of having RyBo stick on Dirk like a leech might actually work.

Otoh, Dirl usually beats everyone who tries to stop him, so it's hardly a knock on Battier. Besides, Memphis is the epitome of 'smoke and mirrors' - they have never been a truly very good team, regardless of the number of regular-season wins they get, and in the playoffs, the always get exposed. But that is a TEAM deficiency, not an individual player problem. I contend that one of the reasons Memphis has been as good as it has been is because of Battier, and that, far from making Battier look bad, the playoff failures of the Grizz merely serve to expose the entire organization as a lightweight.

im going to wait and see how he plays with Tmac and Yao...

if only he can help keeping Yao out of foul trouble.... by actually being able to cover his man... I think thats better than 10 points from him anyday

Ron Burgundy: I saw that. Battier got schooled by a Puerto Rican guy. I think he had to throw a trident.
Brick Tamland: Yeah, there were horses, and a man on fire, and he killed a guy with a trident.
Ron Burgundy: Brick, I've been meaning to talk to you about that. Battier should find a safehouse or a relative close by. Lay low for a while, because he's probably wanted for murder.
