Clippers' Cassell: 'I might have to sit down'

In the Clippers' 98-93 victory over the Rockets on Saturday, Sam Cassell was scoreless in just eight minutes -- all in the first half. Because of plantar fasciitis in his left foot, he might soon be playing a lot less.

"I've got to get this out of my system, so I might have to sit down," Cassell told the Los Angeles Times on Saturday night. "I need to be on the floor to help this basketball team, but with me playing eight or nine minutes here, 10 minutes there ... it's just not going to work. I just can't do my job this way.

"I have a high threshold for pain, and I play through pain, but I can't be effective if I keep doing what I'm doing," he told the Times. "When your team needs you, you want to be there for them, but this thing is no joke."

Cassell has played at least 25 minutes only once in Los Angeles' last seven games, sitting out two. Cassell told the Times that it was difficult for him to run and shoot.

"I know this team relies on me to make shots, but I just can't do it because I don't have the physical ability to do it," Cassell told the Times. "This injury affects your balance. You can't explode, and you can't stop.

"I've really surprised myself with what I can do, but I'm in so much pain afterward when I play. I don't want to let these guys down, but I can't keep doing what I'm doing. Something has to change," he said.

I don't want to write him off too early but Sam may have already played his last productive season. At 37 and considering he played so well last year, it was likely he was going to hit the wall. His body has been breaking down the last several seasons so I expected this to happen. The Clips are dysfunctional without him so they are in deep trouble. Good thing Dunleavy already signed his extension.

Whatever happens, thanks Sam. We'll never forget you killing the Suns in Game 7 (1994) getting inside Derek Fisher's head (forcing Riley to take him out for a minute) and drilling that late bomb in Game 3.

My bad. I forget which game of the series it was but I laughed out loud. Harper had reduced weakfish Kenny Smith to pudding, Sam came in and next thing you know Harper just loses it and Riley had to yank him the next dead ball.

lets not forget the kenny smith vs derek harper series:
because of this, the NBA instituted the "hand check" rule. Harper was hand checking Kenny the whole time, and Kenny couldnt do anything.

Thanks Kenny, no more handchecking in the nba! :p
