This is a horrendous deal from both sides to me.

For Dallas: they're going for a championship. They don't need to penny-pinch now. If Terry or Harris goes down, they no longer have a reliable backup PG! Prior to this, they had a playoff-proven guy to play (offensive and defensive), and they wouldn't miss THAT much.

For Atlanta: they trade their 2nd round pick. They gain a point guard who's not too young. They start winning a few games more this season, which makes it even more likely that they won't get a top-3 pick. Which means they lose their 1st rndr and 2nd rndr. I guess they have a lot of young guys and maybe it's worth a starting PG. But Anthony Johnson better hold up for 35 mins per game for the next 4 years..

That is the blockbuster trade so far?

    This year's trades suck.

Why give up a 1st round draft pick for a player whose value (evident by this trade) is a 2nd rounder?

I pretty much agree with you. Atlanta can more use the pick and now has a glut of vet 1s who are all capable back-ups but weak starters.

Dallas was better served by insurance, I agree. That said it is more understandable for them. Johnson was playing zero and they do get a real low 2nd pick and shaved salary. They might have figured if Terry or Harris goes down they are shot anyway, but I would have kept Johnson just in case Terry, Harris or Stack goes down.

Atlanta gave Dallas the 3rd pick in the 2nd round and TE (ate the salary as an under the cap team can do). One of the last few 1st rounders and salary filler they most take on would seem fair. Atlanta basically would have moved up from 6-9 slots in the draft just for taking on some extra money (say Sura's 3.8 mil deal).

Besides, I am not really sure if it is possible for Atl to have then shipped him to Houston before the deadline (guessing the paperwork done after the deadline). The Mavs surely did this trade so late so there wasn't time for Johnson to go to a rival through Atl (Heat, Hou, SA, LAL), and made it hard for Atl to even send Lue or Claxton away either not knowing their own PG situation.

Dang Mavs, I really wanted Anthony Johnson as a back-up PG for a while. And dang Atl for not dealling their excess vet Pgs they have no use for.
