The astros should trade for Garland. He's a groundball pitcher, and the astros have a good infield defense with the greatest shortstop to ever play on the field.

And Andy isn't really a good fit for the Yankees. Andy gets a lot of groundballs to the 3rd basemen... and well, there's A-rod there to man the fort. Remember, when in doubt, it's Arod's fault. The Cory Lidle crash, the titanic crash, the Great Depression, 9/11, scientology... all Arod's fault.

You know what pisses me off even more about this whole thing: the biased media making the team look like dupes for losing Pettite over 2 million dollars.

Umm, get it right folks. It wasn't two million..it was 18. It wasn't a one year contract, it was a one year contract plus a player option. And you better believe he'll take the option and cash in. It's no wonder the relationship between Drayton and the Hendricks potentially soured. They tell him Pettite won't decide if he'll even play again until Dec. 22 and now he's already signed...and they tell the media Pettite's only looking at playing a year at a time now, they're not even thinking about 2-3 year contracts. Well apparently not. I'm willing to bet if it was just 14 million for one year the Astros would have given him 2 mill more...but obviously they didn't want to take a risk on two years for a player who was never fully healthy while he was here...lest they revisit the Bagwell situation.

Heaven forbid they actually write objectively.

i'll say it before and i'll say it again: good luck to Andy in NY. Time to move on. I am more than ready to deal with a .500 season next year if it means that our young players get the playing time they need to develop. If they get consistent time at their respective positions and get their at-bats, I have no doubt we will have our answers (i.e. Is Ensberg all but washed up? Can Burke finally have that break out season? Can Lane or Lamb show what they can do? Can our young pitchers provide quality starts?). $12 million was a good amount for Pettitte. Anything more would be in Oswalt territory, and even with his championships, Pettitte as of right now is no Oswalt.

no kidding they must be salivating up there in the north east:

as you said, they make it sound like he was going to sign here for nothing, but went to NY for $2M

When you mention dealing with a .500 season, that is exactly what I expected from Andy Pettitte, at best.

If AP wants to do is win a championship for the CITY and the FANS, then why go to the Bronx where the fans and the city have 27 baseball championships? I guess we can find 32 million reasons why now . . .

    This is an AP quote!!!!!

Houston Chronicle - Ortiz Astros notes 9/30/06

"I want to be able to do this again to try to help this organization get to another World Series and hopefully win a World Series. Other than that, that's it. I hope to win a World Series for the city, the fans and the guys in this room. I've done it plenty, plenty enough."

I was honestly shocked by this when I heard about it last night. I really thought all his waffling was just posturing. I guess not. He always seemed like a nice, up-front guy (oh my gosh!), but never too bright. He was just dancing on the Hendrick's bro's and Clemens' strings all along. I expect Roger to do his mid-season return, but to the Yanks.

I wish them the best of luck, because they helped get us to the big dance two years ago, and a game away a year before that (I know, Andy was out for that season). Berkman is relatively young, we have Lee locked up, and have some good young talent coming up and playing now. The future is still bright and the 'Stros are still an elite team.

1010 WINS in New York was reporting this morning the reason why Andy chose the Yankees over the Astros was because he felt insulted with Houston going after Garland from the White Sox. The Trash talking has begun. I'm sure Roger is probably headed towards NY as well.

Screw AP. Insulted? The A-Hole is insulted because the teams wants to move forward when he is unsure is he even wants to play at all anymore.

Not to mention Garland is a BETTER pitcher than AP to begin with.

Hope AP's arm falls off in Spring Training!!!!

Pettitte isnt really a Houstonian anyways, he went to Deer Park!
You got to live within the 610 loop to be a real Houston hero like some kid from Madison.

That narrows it down quite a bit as to who is a Houstonian...since 3/4 of the Metro area people live in the suburbs...
Born and raised here but not inside the loop.
Personally, I think there are very few players who wouldn't, like Pettite, go for the money... but just spare me the Heart and Home crap that he spun...

Pettitte's never even pitched a game 7. He has pitched two DS game 5s, with an ERA of 8.62.

Insulted we went after Garland instead of waiting on a guy who like 5 days ago wasn't even sure if he wanted to pitch again? Plus it was never stated that if we got Garland we wouldn't go after Pettite as well, just that it'd be hard. I would have expected him of all people to realize the ramifications of a team sitting around on their asses waiting for a player to make a decision. He was here during the Beltran negotiations.

Plus that doesn't make any sense either since in another article he stated he would have chosen Houston over NY if they had upped their offer to 14 mill over 2. So you felt insulted but would have still come back to the Astros?

The deals for Carlos Lee and Woody Williams are the only real deals Purpura has made since he's been in that position... and those were the same day...
I think he's dropped the offseason ball more than he hasn't.
    Consider me still unimpressed...

Let me get this straight Andy. You sit there and twiddle your thumbs, hoping the Astros drive up your price tag for the Yankers. When they stand firm on their offer, say "take it or leave it", and start planning alternatives in case you leave, you claim you're offended, that the Astros "didn't push hard enough" for you, and bail. Doesn't this kinda sound like your reasoning for the Yankers in the first place 3 years ago?

man, you just summed that up really well. that's exactly how i feel.

andy tried to play hardball. when the astros played hardball back, he cried foul. now he's packing up and leaving. see ya.
