its kind of funny that pettitte's injured elbow drove him out of ny 3 years ago and into a stros uniform. now it's landing him back in the yankee pinstripes. who's medical staff is right?

I recall Zito was talking to the Rangers earlier, so location-wise, he's not completely opposed to Texas.

I can't see justifying paying Pettitte that much cash. I can just see him putting up a decent season, then coming back and doing it again. His elbow isn't magically going to get better - I think the prospect of paying Andy when he's another year older than he is now is enough to scare me off.

Whether or not Pettitte is better than Garland (or insert your trade prospect) now isn't the real question. The fact that it's even a question tells you what you need to know.

We have Oswalt, Berkman, and Lee locked up for the next 5 years. We have a pair of fairly young, capable of being dominant relievers (Lidge, Wheeler) right around 30. The window of opportunity is not closing soon.

Signing Pettitte to a contract that size is a panic move. Purpura has ice blood in his veins.

i agree... $14m was too steep and would have been impulsive....

having said that, hopefully one of the other deals pans out otherwise we'll be watching stl in the playoffs again.

    Roger's not going anywhere.

As for Andy,I believe the Astros made the right decision in not throwing their money his way.Health issues and a monster 1 year contract make it easy to say goodbye.

We know Timmy is working hard to acquire frontline pitching to go with Roy O,Backe,Williams, and Clemens....a QUALITY inning eater.

I was so sure pettitte would re-sign with us becausehe had done H-E-B commercials. We all know that he talked to the Rocket about this, Apparently Clemens' time spent with T-Mac meant nothing to him.
Can anyone say Carlos Beltran, well now I'm ready to forgive him because what pettitte did was a bull**** move    . I hope he get's hurt and screws those damn Yankees out of $16 million, Trade for Peavy, then trade for Jennings, or sign Weaver, and Suppan, if we can't screw the Yanks, lets screw the Cards.

    Andy,

Thanks for coming home and giving us some good innings, experience, and a good clubhouse influence. I appreciate your time here and wish you the best back in NY, where it all started for you. Don't worry, you aren't stabbing anyone in the back. That's just the haters being stupid. You'd be a fool to turn down $32 million at this stage in your career, especially since you're not talking about a losing club, but your old club that reloads to get to the WS every year. Again, good luck.

Give some of Pettitte's money to Molina. Then trade Willy T and Hirsch to Fla for Dontrelle.

    Roy
    Dontrelle
    Woody
    Roger (2nd half)
    Sampson

    Biggio
    Burke
    Berkman
    Lee
    Ensbeg
    Scott
    Molina
    Everett

    Yeah baby.

Seriously, we should be willing to give Florida Willy T, Pence, and Hirsch if necessary to acquire Dontrelle. He's young, he's a lefty, he's dominating.

I don't think Florida would seriously consider this.

Andy had one and a half good seasons here. The other was an injury plagued season, and the other half was a bad season. I don't blame Drayton for not paying that money. I'm glad the general sentiment on the subject is the same.

In the end, Andy comes off as full of crap, but you can never blame someone for taking the money.

Keep dreaming Brave fan. If you think the Astros won't acquire a number 2 caliber starting pitcher really soon, you are delusional beyond help. Why do you think they were calling on jennings/peavy/garland? It wasn't for kicks.

A deal will happen very soon for a pitcher of that caliber, I believe.

 Lets see. Beltran held us hostage leaving us with nothing while making us think we would sign him and Pettitte made no committments or hints that he would come back to us and you hate Pettitte that much.

I say Good Luck to Andy in New York, he will be the only Yankee I like. He took a lot of heat to come play here for a few seasons, and I have no problem with him wanting to go finish up his career where he started and where his real legacy will be.

The Astros have been working on getting a real #2 starter, and I am sure they will continue to do so. I have confidence the management will get it done.

We have been one of the most competitive organizations in baseball for the last decade and a half. That is not going to change.

Word, I coundnt believe the agent even said that. There is absolutely no way AP doesnt pick up that option. So the math wasnt even close, 32 million versus 14 million.

No way in hell Andy is worth $16 million. Well, unless you are desperate for pitching like the Yankees. My bet is he'll have an ERA well over 5 this season.

I'm also a little ashamed of Andy ... he comes here and because he wants to "be close to home", then talks about retiring, then takes the fat cash. It was about the money the whole time and he knows it. With some players you like to think it's not all about the money ... and I thought Andy was one of them (obviously he wants his fair market value, but I think the Astros offered that this time).

Oswalt, Woody Williams, Hirsch, Sampson ... we've definitely got to be aggressive in the trade market and try to pull in that #2 guy. Add Jennings, Peavy, or Garland to that and that's still a playoff caliber rotation.

I also think Florida will entertain offers for Dontrelle. We'd have to give up a ton for him, but might be worth it.
