If we had drafted Bush, no one would be complaining about ESPN... What did you expect? We knew the media was in love with Reggie since USC and the national championship game last year. We were excited for the first pick and getting Reggie Bush and getting the media attention and so on. Did you expect the lovefest to die out since we didn't draft him? You guys are acting like you are totally shocked to see this.
Like it or not, we're all gonna have to get used to the Bush hype machine for awhile. Remember, ESPN is not an objective sports news network anymore, it is highlight-driven, sensationalistic, viewer (and thus advertiser)-hungry TV network (like most channels these days). Add that formula to Reggie Bush ingredients of: 1) Corporate and street friendly image 2) Key cog in dominating USC program in media-crazy LA 3) #1 draft pick of the Bad News New Orleans Saints post-Katrina 4) Flashy offensive player capable of a spectacular play at any time despite a questionable ability to execute typical NFL RB plays you have a formula for ratings success, which is what the bottom-line is. He's like Vince Carter in that sense, except he's been getting the hype since college. No defensive player is ever gonna get as much run as Reggie (or Vince), and the fact that drafting Mario Williams #1 overall was second-guessed almost universally in the mainstream media is gonna force us to stomach the poor comparisons between the two for the next 10 years (or until someone's performance clearly outchines the other). I kinda like the underdog role, yself, and can't wait until Mario & the Texans show the rest of the country what it takes to be a wining team. Read the sig.
He isn't brilliant...This game showed how ineffective he will be in the NFL...That's why we didn't pick him #1...However, just because he won the Heisman, he will be at the top of every hightlight ESPN (aka Bush ass kisser) does...
You are right, it did not deserve it, but then again there wasn't much else to report on, plus MNF is now an ESPN thing so they had to try to make it look like there was something worth watching about that game. The only thing worse than preseason football is the WNBA. Preseason football is awful. I can't even believe these games are telivised.
I wouldn't be complaining, but I wouldn't understand why they're hyping up a 9 yard run. I understand that they're breaking down his moves, but it's not like we didn't know he could do that before.
Why alot of kids are no longer fundamentally sound, they would rather dunk, swing for the fences, etc... and the hype on "plays of the day" is sometimes sickening...
How about E S P effin' N showing how Mario Williams was double-team on MOST of the passing plays the RAMS had? How about E S P freakin' N saying how 4 carries for 7 yards was completely horrible? No. (that was for you, RM95) Summer Song Giver and RM95... are you guys discussing defensive prowess Lawrence Taylor?
He's the poster boy of ESPN they are going to push him no mater what he does. If continues to suck then they will slowly change their view...but with all the marketing money they paid him i doubt they are going to blast him at this point.
It wasn't a burn. It was an stfu to everybody arguing over the minutiae of a few PRESEASON carries by a running back. "This guy missed his block", "the linebacker read it wrong", "he got lucky".. we're talking about games where the players themselves don't even want to be playing. they're doing their damnedest to not get hurt basically. all of this means -nothing- once week 1 kicks off, so why get all worked up about it.
Donny- We're not discussing/debating Bush's career so far, we're talking about the unbelievable media coverage he is receiving in the 2 preseason games he has played in so far. We all know preseason doesn't mean much, but as one of the posters pointed out, they were dissecting which foot Bush was on (he ran for 7 yards)...I can't think of another NFL player that has received this kind of coverage.
This thread is hilarious. Anyone who believes in this Mario Williams thing is a fool, people in here say "stop watching ESPN", how about all of you stop reading the Houston Chronicle and watching the local news. Drafting Mario will go down as the dumbest draft move in NFL history. We passed on 3 Heisman Trophy winners for a guy with potential, WOW. Mario is Big and Fast. Reggie had a college career that will never be matched. Great move, passing on REAL TALENT for potential... telling me we couldn't draft a defensive end in the 2nd round and mold him into a decent player? What a waste of a pick, in a draft that was loaded. Carr and Williams will both be #1 draft pick busts, Texans are so dumb, if we passed on Reggie and passed on Vince the hometown kid, what makes ya'll think we won't pass on another great talent? The Texans will be at the bottom of the barrel for years to come.
The list is long and distinguished. Look at all of that proven talent. 2003 Jason White 2001 Eric Crouch 2000 Chris Weinke 1999 Ron Dayne 1996 Danny Wuerffel 1994 Rashaan Salaam 1993 Charlie Ward 1992 Gino Torretta 1991 Desmond HOward 1990 Ty Detmer 1989 Andre Ware
