It's funny. I heard that last quote the other day and I thought, "Well, why would you mention his interception if it was negated?" They don't mention negated interceptions normally unless it is a key play in the game and they show the highlight. Basically, it seems like it will be VY and Mario are the red headed stepchildren compared to Bush in the eyes of the national media. And I don't blame Bush. Seems like a decent kid and he's a fantastic player. But, as we all know, the media generally sucks.
wanna compare surrounding college talent? Believe it or not, having one of the greatest quarterbacks, offensive lines and collection of wide receivers in the history of college football might've helped Reggie just a tad to have some of those openings he had at USC.
About as much as preseason games have to do with anyone's overall opinion of pro players come week 2 of the regular season. (In other words, nothing)
in the ESPN recap, here's a couple of paragraphs. "Reggie Bush spiced things up with a nine-yard run and an 11-yard gain on a third-and-2 screen, both on the final drive of the first half. He finished with seven yards on four carries, 14 yards on two receptions -- and disappointment that the starters didn't do better. "This isn't the old Saints any more," he said. "We need to take three-and-outs personal. We need to change our way of thinking. We need to keep our defense off the field. We didn't do our job as an offense."" A couple things bugged me. the 11 year gain was off a screen. 3rd and 2 means cowboys would have to play close to the line to avoid a first down. Chances is Reggie got behind a screen and 11 years is really not all to impressive. The 9 year run, as seen on ESPN every half hour, was nice. But it doesn't decoy from the fact that he was negative 2 with his other carries. What irked me ever more is that the "team" played bad, according to him. With a game like he's had, he should've pointes at himself more. Maybe it's just me, but don't drag the team down with you. But that's just in a psychological standpoint. That couldn't possibly be positive reinforcement for the Saints as a whole.
The NFL is the ONLY pro sports league where the individual players are never above the team. Bush/ESPN will be in for a rude awakening if they try to hype him up as much every week like they did in college.
Bush has always been over-hyped. He needs space to excel. He is not one who breaks tackles. Expect him to be shut down if defenses scheme for him. We won't know who the best players in this draft really were until about the middle of this season or longer.
Try visiting other sports, but non-Houston related message boards. You get to read feces spewing on the screen like "even if Mario Williams becomes an All-Pro, the Texans made a mistake". Say what? It's a mistake to take an All-Pro DE when you have never had any semblence of a pass rush in four seasons? It doesn't help when jerkdicks like Dan Patrick are saying it too. Bottom line, Bush is my least favorite player in the NFL right now and it is not his fault. I would love to watch a player as dynamic as he could be. It would be great to see the second coming of Gayle Sayers, Barry Sanders or Jesus like everyone thinks he is, but if he does, we'll never hear the end of it no matter what Super Mario does. Therefore, I want him to be a bust in the mold of Ki-Jana Carter just to shut everyone up.
I am not for praising Reggie Bush, but it is true that VY had his yards come quite late in the game. He started out bad and racked up some yards near the end. It should be pointed out what string defense someone was up against, but that should be pointed out for any player. Obviously, yards against a 2nd or 3rd team defense arent as impressive as they are agaisnt first teamers. VY actually played quite a bit in that game. Denver used 3 qbs, the Titans used 2 (left Vince in until the end of the game, so he played quite a bit of time)... so looks like the Titans are trying to get him quite a bit of time. Good sign for vince.
yeah that's what pisses me off the most about it. the hype machine makes me want him to fail when it would be great to just watch him be the amazing player that he will more than likely be. it also really pisses me off because it's not like an actual debate when you talk about bush. it's this condescending attitude as if you couldn't possibly disagree on bush being the greatest player ever. my friend was saying that WITHOUT QUESTION he would take reggie bush now over ray lewis when he won the super bowl!!!! and only one person out of the 6 i was with put up mild disagreement! i wonder how the spreads will be the first couple weeks of the season for the saints. i hope they are giving too many points because i want to make money off of this hype somehow. that being said i am also going to look for the texans to be getting too many points since people think we are r****ds and that our team isn't any better because we didn't get bush.
I do agree though that if most high picks got 7 yards.. they'd be bashed by a lot of people... We'll see how long the Reggie Bush hype lasts...
It will actually last longer since he's in New Orleans, instead of a big market like NY, Boston, or Philly. Also, there will be reluctance to bash the Saints in any way/shape/or form after the plight that the city has had to go through... they get a free pass (for at least the next 2 years). I still think, however, that the media shouldn't be irresponsible in their hype... and they are doing that right now by proclaiming a 7 yard game with all the gusto of a guy having a super bowl mvp performance.
Nick... true, being in New Orleans might allow the hype to last longer. Preseason stats are just misleading sometimes. Whether it be VY or Jay Cutler (the guy I've been talking about for years), you have to take into account who they are playing against. For instance, Jay has had two great games..... but to be fair you have to point out that Jake was the starter for Denver and therefore probably saw more of the first teamers (although teams leave first teams in longer as preseason goes on, so Jay did I think see some first teamers at least part of the time the other day since he played quite a bit in the first half ).
