fan support for the NFL and fan support for MLB are two entirely different animals. for lots of different reasons.
DC is weird. Black people in the middle and in Silver Spring. White people all around the beltway and outside of it. El Salvadorians in the north. Everything is so spread out. It's historic, so no freeways...good and bad I guess. Small group of elite wealthy living in DC, and the lower middle class of Texas has more square footage than the typical DC millionaire house. Big ass super mansions in certain areas and on the Patomic. Nobody can drive properly. Gas is way too expensive, but not as bad as in Cali. Skins fans are plenty and loyal and idiotic, but loyal. Cowboys fans are everywhere around there too. Adams Morgan is crazy nightlife, and cops everywhere at night.
Everybody in America thinks their hometown drivers are the worst. Not picking on you, but I hear this all the time from people everywhere. This tangent brought to you by m_cable. Enjoy.
Actually, I'm from Houston, but I've pretty much lived in DC the last few months. Houston drivers are crappy too, but at least they know how to respect the left lane...and the freeway system, though not perfect, is so much better than the DC area.
Baltimore is the 12th largest city in the USA by population (736,014)*. Washington D.C. is the 19th largest city in the USA (606,900)*. Richmond is the 76th largest city in the USA (203,056)*. I'm pretty sure they can handle two teams. Source: United States Census Bureau * This reflects city population not metropolitan area population so the populations of said areas are actually larger than that.
we're basically talking about an area signficantly smaller than the Greater Houston area in terms of population. can you imagine Houston willingly supporting two MLB teams?
is that not included in population? greater houston is home to UH, Rice, St. Mary's, HBU, Sam Houston, huge community college network, medical schools, etc. that's a push, at best.
They do have more than Houston in the metro area and more than the Bay area which supports two teams. http://geography.about.com/library/weekly/aa122099c.htm
No we aren't. The DC area has a significantly higher population that Houston. Personally I think its time for Norfolk/Va Beach or Las Vegas to get some type of major league franchise.
For those who wonder how Peter Angelos will cope or feel sorry for him, read this article by Jayson Stark on ESPN's website - it is too long for me to copy and paste, er don't feel like pasting it, but here is the link:
DC is much more like Dallas with tons of Suburubs. Richmond isn't even close. The 600,000 in DC isn't even close to the number of people living in MD, or NOVA. Arlington probably has 400,000. Fairfax county probably has over a million easy. Alexandria is huge. And that's just NOVA, not even counting the other side of the Potomac. They can assuredly handle two teams.
