Except..he's made it very clear he wants to be on the west coast.

yeah, but that doesn't mean the west coast wants him. plus, he's blown through two west coast teams already; only 5 left to disappoint.

if the idea is to try and turn him into something else, i think it's a silly move. i don't think he'll be able to earn us a draft pick nor is there time to maybe rehabilitate his value by the deadline. or by the end of the season, for that matter. i'd rather we threw that $3+M at our unsigned draft picks.

the only way it makes sense is if they're planning to re-sign him on the cheap or they're willing to deal oswalt. the more i think about it, i think that MIGHT be it......

He absolutely will not get the astros anything unless he pitches like Cy Young for the rest of the year and makes himeslf a type-B free agent.

He was a type-C free agent last year. Type-C = no compensation. Free agent typing is based on 3 years of performance, and he is well below the league average thus far this year. So he would have to turn in ½ a season that would be strong enough to overcome 2.5 seasons of mediocrity and make him qualify as one of the better pitchers in baseball. That would have to be one hell of a ½ season. He would need to put up numbers like Tim Lincecum or Edinson Volquez for the second half.

The fact that people somehow magically assume he is going to turn into a Type-B is starting to annoy me. This is like all of the S-n-T Carl Landry threads in the GARM. IT WILL NOT HAPPEN.

So, in case you are a little slow, and only read flashing lights and moving, blinky things (sorry, the blink tag doesn't work with any browsers, or I'd throw that in there too to get your attention):

<marquee scrollamount="20">Barring a major miracle, there is no way that the Astros will get draft pick compensation if they loose Randy Wolf at the end of the season.</marquee>

What you guys have to understand is that we will get a draft pick if Randy Wolf leaves for free agency.

Hmmm so Randy Wolf is more terrible than I thought and that we're not even guaranteed to get a pick at all (I pictured him in the Matt Morris and Ted Lilly mold and they were Type B). Of course, since Wolf is one of Wade's boys, he'll probably sign him to an extension.

Not necessarily. First Wolf has to "qualify" as a Type A or B player. Apparently he was neither after the 2007 season. Second the Astros have to offer him arbitration and he has to decline.

Brilliant Move! Long term, it doesn't impact the Astros. Short term, we may get to see the Astros win 2 more games than they would have if Runelvys was forced to pitch.

I think too many people focus on only winning the championship and that they lose the ability to just sit back, sip on a beer or two, and enjoy watching the Astros win a game without looking at standings.

Hey guys, I heard from here that we're getting the #1 pick in the next draft when Randy Wolf turns down arbitration at the end of the year for a multi-year deal from one of the West Coast teams (not SD). Wow, what a great move by Wade!!! I'm gonna go over to the ESPN boards and spread the good word!!!!!!

Wolf was fairly close to being a Type B free agent last offseason:

    http://www.sportscity.com/MLB/Elias-MLB-Rankings-Starting-Pitchers

He won't have to have a second half like Volquez or Lincecum to qualify this offseason, if he can stay healthy and pitch a little better than he did in SD, he should be a Type B free agent. It doesn't hurt that guys like Woody Williams, Matt Morris, Steve Trachsel, Freddy Garcia and Roger Clemens were ranked ahead of him. I'd hardly call it a miracle.

And one of the most knowledgeable posters at Orange Whoop Ass agrees:

There are 20 starters ranked between him and the back side of 'Type B' status, and he is doing significanlty worse in several scorable categories than the year that is dropping off. If the season ended today, he would be significantly further away from type B status than he was last year.

    Will not happen.

If you want to bet something on it, I'm game.

From the Astros mailer... stop the insanity!

Wolf Trade increases Astros' playoff hopes

Randy Wolf, acquired from San Diego in a trade on Tuesday, will join the rotation and start Sunday. Ace Roy Oswalt is expected to return from the disabled list on Monday.

The Astros are ready for their uphill battle in the National League Central race, and extra help is on the way with their latest acquisition, and the Astros believe they can climb back in the race once they have everyone on hand.

Ed Wadde is close to becoming a candidate for the laughing stock.

Has anything he has one worked to our advantage yet?

I was OK when it looked as though the moves to date were done with the future in mind. Bourne is a legit prospect although he has done nothing to show he does not belong in AAA.

Tejada trade is a wash at least for now and he fills a void that the organization cannot for at least two more years. Likewise the Matsui signing. There is no one with major league stamped on him near the top of our system.

I was hoping that we could get something for some of our bench players.

Roy O's injury makes discussing trading him moot.

Now the Wolf signing makes me wonder if Wade has a clue. I know we are desperate but this looks like a desperate move to cover up the fact that none of his previous moves has bourne fruit.

Here's hoping that this last weekend is a fluke and the guys can play .750 ball the rest of the year.

i think everyone needs to settle down a bit (says the guy who started a thread earlier today titled, "really, ed wade? REALLY?" but seriously, i would have posted that regardless - how can our GM say that the upcoming pitching market is "pretty thin"???? the astros could be undefeated right now, and it still would have pissed me off. anyway...)

the truth is, ed wade, more or less, gutted a poor team/system - there's not a player he dealt that any of us miss or that would make this team appreciably better... except lidge and, let's be honest, a large majority of fans wanted him dealt last year for a bag of lint pulled from a pile of dog feces. or something. it's not like he made a slew of bagwell-for-anderson like deals with us getting the anderson end of things.

he was given a mandate to make the major league team competitive and to do that (which was a nearly impossible task), he had to get creative. i don't begrudge his offseason - he took chances and did, on paper, make the team better.

i've posted this before; i can understand drayton's perspective on rebuilding. he knows the team will not be competitive in the short term, and recognizes there's no guarantee it'll be competitive in the long run. it's a lot easier to try and mix and match parts around oswalt and berkman than it is to find and develop the next oswalt and berkman. you can toss carlos lee into that mix, too.

my sincere guess is that if both were consistently playing below their norm and on their last legs, that mcclane would be looking to rebuild. that's why comments like the pitching market is "thin" bothers me. but wade and his group had a pretty remarkable track record with drafts in his tenure - let's see where our system is in 2-3 years - that'll be his legacy.

WOW !! Finally someone else on this forum see's what I see. I have posted this comment many times here. As long as Uncle Drayton is getting people in the seats he could care less about winning or losing. To him its only about money and thats it !!!! He knows nothing about baseball he never even played the game. I went to school with his sons as Drayton lives in my hometown. They always said this was just a big toy for him and he always told them it was an investment !Until he sells this team they will always be pretenders !!!!!

Possibly the dumbest Astros post ever. Seriously. This team has been very competitive under McLane. I don't think even cardpire will argue that the Astros have been pretenders during his ownership. They been in the NLCS 2x...they've won a pennant...they've been to the playoffs 6 times.

Seriously...this is really bad. You may be a prince and/or a professor. But wow.

    Quick..distance yourself cardpire!!!!! :D
