From what I read, he rarely even touched 88 in AAA. I'm hoping his loss in velocity can partially be attributed to all the innings he's thrown this season and that he'll regain some of it next season. But even if that's the case, you're right -- I'm worried by the hype he's getting... expecting much this season is quite a stretch.
yea, purpura said in an interview on astros.com that he's been at 85-87, but ive personally seen him throw 94mph, and even in highschool he was consistently 89-90. go watch his draft video and you'll see him sit at 90mph, and at the futures game he was 92-94mph. his delivery is a lot less violent than it was in highschool, maybe he's just trying to tone things down and saving some when he needs it, i dont know. we'll see tonight. if he does get his velocity back to where it was, he's a much better prospect than albers or even jason hirsh, and could be a #2 or #3 pitcher. either he's extremely overrated, or extremely underrated.
looked good in his 1st inning. fastball had some life to it, looked 87-90 imo, the radar gun wasnt on fsn
troy must not be as highly regarded as i thought. they dont even have a little "astros' patton makes debut" on that little scrolling thing on mlb.com
well, its the astros...nobody outside of texas really cares his fastball has been sitting at 89mph with an easy delivery without much effort. the breaking ball is a slider with 10-4 break in the high 70's. not the sharp darting slider you normally see. big break on it that reminds me of andrew miller. both throw across their bodies and neither have sliders that have high velocity but they have a big break. changeup has been unimpressive as his arm speed is not consistent with his fastball. he sorta floats it up there.
astros out of race astros not big market and it's against the pirates if he pitches real good then they probably will.
troy looked pretty good today. fastball was mostly 87-89 and threw a few at 92 and 94. a quality start...cant ask too much more for a 1st start
