For every KG and TMac that makes it from "tremendous upside" to genuine All-Star, there are dozens and dozens of disappointments, from total busts to only-serviceable roleplayers (Kwame Brown, Darko, Telfair, Sam Bowie, Stromile Swift, so on..).

Think about it another way.. if Rudy Gay really was a guaranteed All-Star, do you --really-- think he would've been available at the 8th pick? He dropped below Foye, Roy, and some guy from Senegal!

If TMac and Yao stay healthy, the Rockets are going to be in the playoffs. Having Battier or Gay + Swift isn't going to change that. Even if Gay isn't a future all-star, he can still be a young, athletic role player that can put up the same type of numbers that Battier does. He would have a cheaper contract than Battier and he would be an asset we can include in a trade if things don't work out.
