the few great artists/bands in the 70's does not make up for the whole crappiness of that decade.

The 70's were awesome. Best music decade ever and the last one where music wasn't divided into the stupid categories like it is now. You could dial up KRBE and hear The Allman Brothers followed by Stevie Wonder followed by Aerosmith followed by The Temptations followed by The Who followed by Sly and the Family Stone followed by ZZTop followed by Earth, Wind, and Fire followed by Pink Floyd...

You can't think that the Bee Gees and the theme from Star Wars are representative of music from the 1970's.

not persuaded by the arguments lol. 60's was the best/most influential IMO.

Stones were at their best in late 60's/early 70's IMO. Agree with 70's Clash. Led Zeppelin needs a mention in the 70's.

/back to your Reginald Dwight thread

only two personal favorites from Sir Elton John..

Tiny Dancer.. Don't Let the Sun Go Down On Me..

one, because it never fails to remind me so perfectly, of someone whom i still think of fondly.. and consider a friend..

the other i relate to for self-explanatory reasons..

i agree.. that anything 70's from Michael Jackson is far superior to anything on BAD.. or that short lived 80's Jackson reunion..

but i hope you're not intentionally overlooking the quality that is "Thriller"..

Yes, I like him. If the only LP Elton John and Bernie Taupin ever put out was Madman Across the Water, I'd like him simply for that. Just a beautiful record. Certainly don't care for all his stuff, especially after he quit writing with Taupin, but Madman Across the Water is a first class album.

I like Billy Joel's music...that's not to say he's an upstanding individual or anything, but I grew up with Beatles, Bob Dylan, and yes oddly enough, Billy Joel records playing in the house. My favorite album is The Stranger, seriously, so many good songs on that one. I do agree with Batman that Dylan pwns all, no question. He's a completely diff. genre but I associate him with Elton John and Billy Joel. For Elton, my favorite songs are Benny & the Jets and Tiny Dancer.

1824...not really. Music from any decade can be listened to and studied at any point these days, so being born to a specific decade or year is sorta irrelevant to what I readily admit is a subjective topic...if you want to use the "You weren't even born/really experienced that decade kid!" angle. You didn't have to be actually at Haight-Ashbury in the 60's to know there was a cultural phenomenon going on there.

Elton may have help, but he's written some really amazing songs.
He's got the voice, the piano skills, and no lack of stage presence. I'm not a fan of the later stuff, but if we stick to the 70's and even most of the 80's he's one of the all time greats of popular music, without a doubt.

Billy Joel for me wrote one great song, Piano Man. It still doesn't sound at all dated. The rest of his stuff, for me, and no respect to Fatty, only has value for its nostaliga.

I love the scene from Almost Famous when they all start singing Tiny Dancer on the bus.

Which reminds me- Which of the oldsters here remembers the DJ "Crash" on KLOL in the early 70's. I was only in kindergarten, but I used to call the station and request songs. This was a time when djs would actually answer the phone themselves.

Billy Joel's best stuff all predates The Stranger. just like Bonnie Raitt's best stuff predates Nick of Time.
