No, literally anyone can get nominated. There's no honor in it. Look up how it works, it's about 2 posts above this.

The video in that post mentioned that Russia is purchasing them from a third party.

It has user authentication, but can’t it be used to block Russians?

I think I’m missing something here. Story doesn’t add up. I find this similar to using a service for free, somehow, or it might actually be a paid service covered by someone on behalf of the Russian military. I’m both cases, starlink needs to do a better job.

    https://www.businessinsider.com/ukraine-spacex-trying-to-stop-russia-using-starlink-2024-2
    • Ukraine is working with SpaceX to stop Russian soldiers using Starlink, a Ukrainian minister said.
    • SpaceX — and its founder Elon Musk — had disputed that Russia had access to Starlink at all.
    • Ukraine now says SpaceX has conceded that it is happening, and is working on ways to deny access.

The service is designed to be bought at your local hardware store, pull it out of the box and go. Thousands of these packages have been going to that region.
How do you validate thousands of users without cutting off legit users.
These a commercial products, not mil products.

Not available at my local HW stores. It's a commercial product commonly used by the military. Perhaps it needs a classification upgrade to include export control restrictions, if it hasn't been done already.

I'm pretty confident there are numerous ways to ensure services aren't enabled for use by the Russian military.

This has been discussed in length in the Ukraine thread a while back when people like yourself whinged about musk threatening to cut starlink free funded access. This is a commercial product. The current administration declined to help starlink build a mil constellation but caved at the peak of the drama. Starshield is being developed now which will be own and operated by the military. For now people should appreciate there is a constellation that can help the Ukrainians currently instead of b****ing and moaning about every little atrocity.
Again, nobody is complaining the manufacturer of the weapons the biden Administration left behind are being utilized by the taliban.

I really don't know what you are talking about. In any case, it's used by the Russian military and they need to disable that usage and I'm quite sure they can.

    Its very very very simple
A starlink terminal can be bought at a local hardware store like Home Depot or even Amazon. It can be donated to Ukraine for operational purposes. Or Russia. Or whatever. SpaceX doesn't know who the user is. The terminal is designed to be taken anywhere in the world where Starlink service is available.
Its not easy or a simple wave of the hand to disable if a Russian operative uses it as you are implying. SpaceX will likely have to geofence Russian occupied areas in Ukraine to prevent starlink services. And areas that have close quarter combat, its hard to see who is who.

Again, if Trump and the stupid biden administration got behind SpaceX early on instead of raging about the silly **** he says on X, the US government would have its own constellation up and running that would not allow commercial antennas to be on the network. Instead, the biden administration has continued to sabotage the development and now its biting them in the ass. And people like yourself just want a wave of the hand solution because you all have been short sighted and can't think beyond the next election cycle.

Fortunately the government is getting behind SpaceX now and this hasn't affected US operations.

That is a direct violation of the terms of service.
    ______

You must comply with all applicable International Trade Controls in the context of this Agreement, including applicable export control, economic sanctions, customs/import, anti-money laundering, and anti-corruption laws and regulations. You acknowledge that you are only authorized to access Services at the location identified on your Order or otherwise authorized by Starlink, and you will not divert the Starlink Kit or Services to any other locations, or to users or for uses that are prohibited under International Trade Controls.

You’re talking about purchasing the hardware.

The service isn’t enabled until payment, which, for regular consumers, likely involves a credit card and address. For large enterprises or the military (Ukraine), it’s probably a different system. Nothing is a wave of the hand. Unless the authentication is severely weak (service stolen) or there isn’t a means to verify users, enterprises, or locations of use, they can implement a solution to disable usage by the Russian military. I am very doubtful they don’t have the capability in hardware or can’t develop the capability in software.

P.S. “People like you” sounds like you are simply putting a bunch of people in a bucket. There’s too much generalization on your part and you are going off topic.
