This move sorta seals my decision not to watch AI anymore.

Regardless of whether or not this is a good choice for AI, there are certainly people who are more annoying. Rosie? Whoopi? I suggest we take this thread over and re-title it "People more annoying than Ellen".

I've never seen an episode, either, but I thought the formula was built around the jerk verses the ditz? Ellen is too nice and too smart to make any arguments with the jerk look authentic, so the entire vibe of the program is going to change over this, right?

And you know that damn program is popular when someone who's never watched an episode is familiar enough with the narrative to offer a somewhat valid critique of the new host and her role on the show.

Arrrrgh, get out of my head, stupid pop culture!

Will change from: Good vs. Evil

    evil usually winning
    to
    good usually winning

I don't see Simon having the verbal repertoire to out duel Ellen.

Well, the poster directly after you seems to have an easy time doing it.

That's what I was thinking. Simon consistently made Paula look stupid, but now I think Ellen will be able to dish it back if she disagrees. She'll also add some comedy I think, which should be good (unlike the comedy Dennis Miller added to MNF).

I'm surprised to see people actually can't stand Ellen. I'm not a fan of many female comedians, but I think she is very likable and pretty funny.

I used to watch the show occasionally, but will probably check it out more now.

Simon made Paula look stupid because Paula's brain cells were allegedly liquefied.

Now, I'm not saying she was hungover consistently because she was swigging vodka like it was water, BUT, people out there, people who might be in a position to know have said she was, so I'm just putting it out there. Reasonable people, who may or may not loathe Paula Abdul, can disagree? Right?

For those that find her annoying or just plain dislike her, I'm curious why.

    She scissored Portia de Rossi.

    OK in my book.

edit: To answer seriously, I think a lot of people in the "entertainers" industry dislike her for crossing the line in the writer's strike.

I get the entertainment factor of bringing in Ellen but why is she judging a singing competition?

Is there some musical connection that I'm missing?

I've seen her sing and dance in her stand up before.

I don't mind Ellen, I just loathe American Idol.

    Seriously, why the obsession?

    I just don't get it.

    LOL yes.

And who knew Ellen was so polarizing? I find her very amiable, like a female version of Tom Hanks in that respect.

As for replacing Paula...I've also never seen the show, but was she really more qualified to judge music than anyone else? I assumed she was just an average singer thrown into the microphone booth to sing manufactured pop songs because she looked good at the time. I think Ellen would be just as good as anyone else.

Well, there goes the (unintentional) comedic value of having Paula on the show. That was the only reason I watched last season. I don’t even remember who won.

I thought the point of the judges was to provide the expert feedback. Degeneres can't do that. The common (wo)man's point of view is already represented by all the people who actually vote on the contestants.

But, whatever. I don't like the show nor watch it. I think the whole thing is a sham anyway, so having someone who doesn't know anything about music in the panel of experts doesn't really hurt the show's legitimacy any further.

exactly! to see someone fulfilling their dreams by becoming a singing sensation kinda fascinates me
i like music, i like some reality tv. so the combo of both is perfect for me.
