He plays like Manu driving to the rim, then Like Scola when he's posting up. I hope they do get him. Also Maarty luenen.
The guy is good, I´ve seen some of his team games trough ESPN international, obviously, being a Rockets fan I paid special attention to his game. He is pretty good at scoring, as some posters said he is not special defending, but they are clearly trying to develop him into their star player. His size is great and is smart, other thing that I found interesting is that for a young guy playing in euro league, he doesn´t shy away from contact as others, once he can make a name for himself in NBA he would get to the line at will. I, honestly, can see it contributing for the rockets for many years, it would give us scoring from the bench form year 1, and with time and patience I can see him contributing alas Scola and becoming eventually a solid starter. Remember the guy is really young.
This isn't a good draft year. I'm not sure anyone is worth buying a pick for, except in the top of the lottery. We have enough youth to develop right now, unless we can pick up a star player.
Wouldn't surprise me though that Morey has got his eye on a few players even though this is a weak draft and if they slip through the cracks Im pretty sure Les and Morey will purchase a pick to stockpile more young talent. Teams are going to be strapped for cash and this may be an opportune time to buy if Morey feels there is alot of value they can get from a certain area in the draft. I think I remember Jonathan Fegien talking about the rockets looking to aquire a pick before the trade deadline.
Well, Newley had an interesting entry on his wiki page: "In the fourth match day of the A1 Ethniki 2007-08, Newley scored 32 points on 12-of-12 shooting for Panionios in a win against A.E.K. By making 8-of-8 three-pointers, a new record was set in the Greek A1 League competition.[3] The previous mark was of 7-of-7. He was also named the MVP of that week.[4] Selected for the "Rest of the World" team in the 2007-08 Greek League All Star game.[5] In the summer of 2008, Newley left Panionios and signed with the Greek club Panellinios." Makes me feel a little bit better about his range. According to another site, he's averaging 10.8 points in 27 minutes a game in Greece so far this season with 1 assist and 4.5 rebounds. Shooting 75% from the line and 51% from the field (36.2% from 3 point, 60.4% from 2 point range). Also found a radio interview (didn't get to download it, sorry) where he apparently wants to join the Rockets very soon. Maarty is in Turkey playing for the dreaded Darussafaka Cooper Tires team, and is averaging 12.37 points (30th in the league, 2nd on the team), 6.16 rebounds, and 1.32 assists per game. Playing a lot for them, averaging just over 30 minutes a game for them, assuming my math is not totally off.
Nevermind, I just saw on that wiki page you were referring to that he's listed as 6'7". I could have sworn I saw him at 6'4" when he was drafted a few years back though......hard to believe someone in their early 20's can really gain height like that
is it good at playing without the ball? this team desperately needs another player, like scola but more of a shooter who can score off screens, who can score without dominating the ball.
Scouting report I've seen says he loves moving without the ball and setting himself up for easy shots. Shys away from contact near the rim, but still shooting nearly 70% from the field this year. Has some nice post moves (fall away jumper and a lefty hook) and tons of athleticism. Still needs to put on some mass and learn to finish at the basket, not falling away from it. Sounds like he's not as scrappy as Scola, but is at home in a motion/fast breaking offense like Adelman's.
good to hear he is playing well over there. the guy though that most intrigued me from our summer league team last year was Gustavo Barrera any word on what he is doing?
LEEEE EL-EEE-AHHH OOOOOOOOOOOO! classic. Notice all of the buckets in that highlight were driving to the basket from the perimiter. Here's my issues 1. He won't get away with that in the NBA if he can't shoot, which, by all accounts, he can't 2. He isn't strong/bulky enough to play NBA PF on the low block, offensively or defensively 3. Unless we got the preseason guy to announce every game, it really wouldn't be worth it.
Unless this guy signs for somewhere near 1 mil per season...we won't have enough room under the cap to sign him. This is assuming we let Luther walk and use that money on a pick. would love it if we could buy a pick around the 20's
We have to be clear about this, he may not be ready for next season, but the guy is going to be a contributor, and given the pick that he was, I would be extremely dissapointed to see him play with another team in the NBA unless is in exchange for somebody who can put us in contender mode. It is truth that I didn`t see him shoot enough, and this may be caused of a poor jumper. But the guy can move, and has this "ginobili" kind of movements. He can be very useful slashing. I don`t agree with the report telling he shies away from contacto, in euroleague, in my opinion, if you don`t want to have contact, you simply don`t penetrate. And the guy does this several times.
Agree. I think Leunan might could beat out Cook if it came down to it. But with Cook's player option it keeps him on the team. I dont think the Rockets are looking to do any Jackie Butler/Justin Reed type cuts paying players who arent on the roster. Head figures to be gone, Wafer should come back but you never know. Newley could be in the mix, depending what the Rockets do in the draft. I prefer the Rockets find the tallest most athletic defending big man they can get
Clearly I cannot 'scout' Eliyahu but I hope this bodes positively for our Rox. Equally murky, however, is trying to analogize V-Span to him. I wouldn't either predict or be shocked if DM the GM and Adelman efforted to bring KillBill back here for next season.
I know, what I meant was for example if he were going to be traded in some kind of deal that would not bring talent to the team. For example Eliyahu for a future pick.
