The more telling signs are the margins of victory, especially in the suburb demographics.

You should be excited about Virginia, in my opinion. It was a sweep of statewide offices that few thought possible. Even more surprising is the huge upset in their state assembly elections. With recounting going on, Democrats may still pull out a majority there. That's big. Redistricting looms ahead after 2020. I'm not as excited about New Jersey. You have a point there, but I think the Virginia results were a big surprise for both major parties.

What is great about New Jersey is that Republican Senator Menendez will soon be former Senator Menendez, and a Democratic governor will be able to appoint his replacement. That's huge, given the tiny majority the GOP has in the Senate.

To me this is shaping up to be a lot like 2009. Many voters are angry about Trump with good reasons, just like in 2009 many tea party voters were angry with Obama for being a Muslim, Communist, Atheist Nazi. We will see if 2018 is the opposite end of 2010 in one year.

it's bigger than that though - in spite of their popular vote weakness and generally horrific policies that most voters hate - Republicans were able to use their strength in low turnout elections to engineer bulletproof majorities at the state level which eventually helped to turn swing states into the red column via voter suppression and the like - see Wisconsin, North Carolina, etc.

Winning boring sh-t like the Va House of Delegates especially as you get close to redistricting is the only way to reverse this trend.

That is so 20th century. Redistricting can happen any old time.

Redistricting will happen in NC before 2018 (and should have happened before 2016).

A transgender won a political seat in a southern state because everyday folks don't care about the identity politics used to try and divide and conquer. She won because she spoke and listened to her voters to great success. I wish him/her well.

This also proves what I've said all along, Trump has the power to shake the system and a transgender former journalist winning a political seat is proof. Trump for better or worse is energizing, engaging, prompting, folks, to get their heads out of their asses which is what I said Bernie or he could do. I'll wait for all the apologies coming my way.

So a transgender person winning a state house seat is proof that Trump, who tried to ban transgender people from serving in the military, is shaking up the system? What the hell are you even talking about?

Please keep believing this. I hope all Trump fans stay in their safe spaces until 2018.

I don't think Trump can count on Bill Kristol's vote...

I hope the rabid trump fans keep thinking the Virginia elections were meaningless. We're going to have the highest turnout for a midterm election in years thanks to Mr. trump. Anti-trump voters will swarm the polls come hell or high water. The man has generated an astonishing amount of anger, aimed squarely at him and his "policies," such as they are. They vary from day to day, sometimes hour by hour. Remember the surprising Gingrich Revolution? This will be 2.0, except that Gingrich will have nothing to do with it, and it's going the other way this time. Wait and see.

I agree. I think the GOP will be swept out of the House in 2018. This is the current dynamics, and unless something changes it, the GOP will be the House minority party next year.

There is nothing better than an angry voter. Ran or snow will not stop that person for pulling that lever.

Yes. No way a transgender journalist runs let alone wins a southern state seat. Completely abnormal just like Trumps victory. Abnormal is good and it's what I wanted.

Trump's tweet about 2016 is a bit like Cavs tweeting about being last season's Eastern Champs when they play badly this season.
