No he didn't. He pointed out the dangers of aflluence...but by his standards of the context he was in, virtually everyone in the US would be affluent.

He was concerned about the heart...not the outward trappings.

As for the question...I'm Chrisitan...I've voted Republican...I've voted Democrat. Neither one has cornered the market...and when the Church gets in bed with either, it's dangerous. Both speak truth...both speak lies.

Republicans must have missed that memo, since they hate
    • black men
    • gay men
    • dirty illegal immigrants
    • women who do not know their place aka feminists
    • liberals
    • poor people
    • etc

wrong again. I am a republican (at least, thats what I registered). I don't hate:
    • black men
    • gay men
    • dirty illegal immigrants
    • women who do not know their place aka feminists
    • liberals
    • poor people
    • etc

to be honest, it sounds like you have a lot of hate, and you insist on labeling large groups of people based on a small sample size.

I just want to say that the old "Jesus hated rich people" or "God hates rich people" lines are ridiculous. Nowhere does it say that in the Bible. You are severely misunderstanding the context of the scripture. The reason it is harder for a rich man to get into heaven has nothing to do with the actual material wealth and everything to do with the heart that belonged tot he people Jesus was discussing.

King David was a rich man and Scripture tells us that he was a man after God's own heart. King Solomon obviously wealthy as well. The list could go on and on of people that are wealthy in the Bible that are also true believers and on their way to heaven.

The point about the rich is that if one chooses to value Earthly treasures over God, he damns himself over materials that ultimately hold no value to any of us. The Bible DOES NOT condemn personal wealth!

No he wasn't. Jesus was apolitical. His concern was with the soul. As for governments, he basically said to obey the law of the land.

Hopefully he has switched off that Vytorin stuff that recent studies show doesn't work as well as other statins. But I digress..... :p

This is an interesting discussion. One of my pastors did a series called "Mythbusters" which obviously had some funny traits much like the show, but sought to shed some light on some of these stereotypes.

One week, the title was "Myth 2: Jesus was a White Republican."

I probably should have added adjectives to the rest of my list, for the satire impaired.

Like it or not, the Republican party has proclaimed itself the Party of Jesus. Republican politicians wrap themselves not only in the flag but also with bible scripture. One of the few who doesn't is McCain- who many say isn't a real republican.

The who promote pre-emptive warfare, the death penalty, gun rights, and enriching the wealthy while reducing/abolishing welfare... are the politicians of Jesus Christ.

And before you apologists start with the excuse "the democrats aren't any better", the democrats never made this claim. Politicians like Bush who claim to be born-again Christians while supporting war, death penalty, etc, should expect to be called on it. I have a hard time imagining that these guys have an honest conversation with themselves asking What Would Jesus Do? on their policies.

The favorite verses of modern American Churches are along the lines of "God helps those who helps themselves." That's good stuff, the ethics of personal responsibility. But you rarely hear the verses re: the camel through the needle of an eye, he who is first shall come last, etc. The bible versus extolling compassion for the poor are COUNTLESS. But you won't hear them in a modern church much.

As for David and Solomon- I'd prefer to hear examples of godly rich men from the new testament than the old. Many Chistians defend oddities and conflicts from the old testament with the arrival of Jesus as the great big Do Over- that old stuff doesn't count now. So, in the name of the Do Over, let's hear defenses from the new testament.

In any case, we may finally be in the midst of the fracturing of the Republican party between social/religious conservatives and financial/libertarian conservatives. It's about damn time.

    1. there's no defense...it's not necessary, because Christ tells us we're all broken. you don't have to be rich to be obsessed with money...to make money your own little god. the rich are certainly no closer to God because they're rich...and the poor are certainly no closer to God simply because they're poor. Jesus talked about how the Roman centurion he met (who likely would have been wealthy in that time period) had more faith than anyone he had met amongst the Jews (those he expected to have more faith)...but he treats everyone he comes across with a sense of respect...except maybe for the religious leaders of the day who he calls vipers.

    2. having said that...taking care of the poor seems to be hugely hugely hugely important to God. this is arguably the most common theme that runs from start to finish...from OT to NT. it stems from the notion that everyone is created in the image of God....and that every life deserves dignity...more than dignity, love. from personal experience, it's my interaction in this service when I feel closest to God.

    3. there is nothing in the Bible that says God helps the man who helps himself. it's not scriptural. it's very American, though.
