Ja probably watched Parts Unknown every night from his jail cell, wishing he was a free bird again. Lulz.
This movie was dope. Those who were expecting serious heist thriller may be disappointed because this movie doesn't take itself too seriously, which was apparent from the trailers. This film is from the Edgar Wright / Guy Ritchie school of hyper kinetic visual storytelling; fast, tight edits with quick witty dialogue and layered subtext. The excellent soundtrack and its visualization in almost every scene is brilliantly executed by Wright. My favorite aspect overall. One most creative uses of music ever in a movie. Lastly, Ansel Elgort delivers a star-making performance. Expresses so much through body language alone with minimal dialogue. 9/10. A true summer popcorn flick.
8.5/10 Ansel was spectacular. Star. Song incorporation was well done. Slick. But some questionable decision making by the the characters. The waitress seemed to go along with everything even after her new boyfriend just shot someone dead. And not sure why from a thinking standpoint Ansel started working for da mobster in the first place when he was seemingly an independent character from the get go. Then he does the final job but why. Couldn't buy into the character decisions. Was expecting another great car chase at the end, never got it. Still, was rooting for Ansel all the way. And some of the expected moments become unexpected, like getting caught and imprisoned, the mobster helping him, and Foxx not being the primary antagonist in the end. Interesting mix of serious and non serious film making in the same shot.
Not bad. Was entertained, wasn't a typical story. Probably wont watch it again though or think much about it ever.
I wanted to like it. I really did but it just wasn't for me. It was clever but dry. It was suspenseful but flat. It just seemed like every time I wanted to get excited I lost my boner.
Movie was excellent until... Spoiler when kevin spacey's character decided to give baby his tape and help him escape at the cost of his own life. the whole "i was in love once" part was just cringey and out of place/character. 8/10
Spoiler Disagree. I think it was established he had a bit of an affinity for Baby, so helping him didn't seem far-fetched. But what I thought was out of character was when he relented to Jamie Foxx demanding to do the heist anyway. And that he didn't kill him for screwing up the gun purchase.
Baby got caught by Spacey, stealing priceless goods out of the trunk of one of his cars. 2 choices: die, or work for Spacey.
Spoiler I see your point, but I still think going from threatening to break his legs and hurt his loved ones so he'll continue to do heists for him to giving his life for him is too much of a jump
Finally got around to watching it. I've decided that critics must be getting paid now. 90-something on rottentomatoes and high 80's on metacritic. It was certainly better than marginal, don't get me wrong, but I can't imagine that many critics loving it. My favorite part was the trailer for Logan Lucky.
I enjoyed it. Give it an 8/10. Didn't live up to the RT hype but not a bad movie. Just wasn't amazing.
