They didn't cut them to save money, they were salary cap moves. It's a hard cap. There's no luxury tax in the NFL.
because both of those players are better then Glover right now and we can cut them when we re-up Watt to the mega mega contract.
At most it will be a 2 year contract, not sure what there is to b**** about. I think Reeds veteran leadership and knowledge of the game will make him worth whatever price we pay for him. He will make sure that secondary is where they need to be on every single play. Plus the Ravens just won a Super Bowl with a Pollard/Reed safety tandem. Yeah, Bernard freaking Pollard, the same guy who was a key contributor to one of the worst secondaries in NFL history while with us. Yes Reed is a stop gap, but he is one of the best safeties to ever play the game, plus he has a really great track record against Tom Brady which the Texans do not. Short term deal for a good safety gives us flexibility in the future. With deals for Cush and Watt coming up, we need to have money to spend in the future.
O hell yea, he is a legend of a safety, and when he is well done playing at 40, will probably still be better than half the safeties in the league... Yea he is 34.5 years old, but all we need is 2 years from him before transitioning personnel. Looks like it is happening
As much as the Chicken Littles here are running rampant, crashing into each other in full-blown fits of panic because the Texans have lost exactly none of their 9 Pro Bowlers and all of two starters (three, if you count Walter - but everyone wanted him gone) - can you imagine what it must be like in Baltimore? They had to purchase a bank to keep Joe freaking Flacco; meanwhile, the exodus of quality players continues - both starting ILBs, an OLB, both starting Ss and their second-best offensive player during their SB run. As always - perspective, people... the Texans aren't getting appreciably worse. Meanwhile, the "best" team in their conference looks like a shell of the team that won a SB five weeks ago.
you people are stupid. Quinn sucked and Reed at the age of 60 will be better than Quinn can ever hope to be. This is a great thing for the texans to add a veteran leader in the secondary, even if it is only for a couple of years. Joseph, Jackson, Manning, and Reed sounds pretty solid to me in the back field.
They won a Superbowl brah. They have scoreboard homer. Their GM has done nothing but nail drafts lately and they have arguably the best coach in the NFL.
Im trying to understand why anyone would be hesitant to sign Reed...is it because he was battling injuries last year and that makes people worry about his age? He still played in 16 games...and he's definitely an upgrade over Glover.
The Texans really can't seem to win with too many of these people. Every free agent that hits the street is THE player that could absolutely, positively make the Texans super-duper great, they MUST sign them, regardless of age, cost, ability, because they should be in WIN NOW!!!!! mode...... And here the Texans are - giving every indication they're in full-blown win now mode by pursuing Ed Reed... and he's over the hill, not better than Quin, does he play QB?........ If the Texans sign Ed Reed and Brian Cushing is back healthy, that's about as significant an offseason as any team in football. Ed Reed is welcome on any team of mine.
Tania Ganguli @taniaganguli Most awful thing I've seen on Twitter: some fan just tweeted me they hope McNair's plane crashes because they disagree with this move. Spoiler chris petrella @kubiaksux @taniaganguli @HoustonTexans Maybe..and hopefully this plane crashes..this is a ridiculous meeting and move. rick smith=worst nfl gm chris petrella @kubiaksux @taniaganguli @HoustonTexans too bad other 2 stooges mcnair and kubiak not with them if it does
Signing Reed would almost certainly be coupled with drafting his eventual successor in April. Draft pick gets to learn from one of the greats for 2 years and take over in year 3 (and hopefully pushes Keo off the depth chart). Kind of like how Quin switched positions and became the starter in his 3rd year. I'm more than OK with that. You're making assumptions about what kind of deal Reed is going to get.
