[rquoter]The Philadelphia Eagles will ask cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha to restructure his contract or they will release him, league sources told ESPN NFL Insider Adam Schefter.

The two sides are meeting Friday in Indianapolis at the scouting combine. Asomugha, 31, is scheduled to make $15 million, $4 million of which is guaranteed.

A three-time Pro Bowler with the Raiders from 2003-10, Asomugha has been a major disappointment with the Eagles since signing a five-year, $60 million contract in 2011.

Philadelphia thought it was assembling an all-star team that would compete for the Super Bowl, but the Eagles finished 8-8 in 2011 and 4-12 last season, leading to the firing of longtime coach Andy Reid.

In addition to Asomugha, new coach Chip Kelly has a decision to make on cornerback Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, who is set to become an unrestricted free agent.[/rquoter]

That offseason reminded me of the Beltran fiasco.

I still believe he can be one of those impactful defensive players in the league. No doubt better than Joseph (albeit different) in my opinion. Joseph and Manning > Nnamdi, but Nnamdi still might be the best CB in the league. I refuse to believe he's lost his edge, that's on the Eagles' ****ty defensive situation and philosophy.

this. watching the Eagles last year, it seemed like they could never get it together defensively. There was always some type of confusion on the back end it it always resulted in a blown coverage. I still think Nnamdi is a great CB, but I certainly wouldn't pay him top dollar.

He will get released then realize not a single gm will pay him what he wants. Then hoody and management will pick him up for a dollar and sixty cents, non guaranteed.

I'm not a fan of this line of thinking. It's similar to saying the Rockets were on the losing end of the TRob trade since he's sucked on the Kings.

Thing is Asomugha was on a level of unbelievably impenetrable defense on some really mediocre teams. This is more of the Eagles' defensive woes than Asomugha. I refuse to believe that such a talent, just faded away, like that.

I agree with others saying that the Eagles defensive woes played a more significant role than Nnamdi just losing his talent.

The first year they tried to play zone coverage with him when he was a bump-and-run, man-to-man cover corner. In my opinion, zone defense coverage is what is used when you don't have the talent to play man-to-man.

The second year the Eagles had a total lack of generating QB pressure with their front seven. When you have a lack of pressure on the QB, you're defensive backfield is going to be picked apart no matter who you have back there.

Combine those with the fact the Eagles have had horrible safety play and inconsistency in their defensive schematics, I'd say it is easy to see how Nnamdi seems to have diminished as a player.

The game that sticks out to me last year was against the Lions. Megatron was essentially shut down for three quarters, Castillo switches up the scheme in the fourth quarter and Megatron goes off for a big game and was a large part of the reason the Lions won that game.

I'm not saying Nnamdi is without blame, there were some times where his play was bad but I think a lot of it was from the things listed above. I don't think he is worth $15 million/season and should restructure his deal. I also don't think he'll find anything like that if he is released.

Not that it has anything to do with his play but he seems like a really good guy. It's a shame he hasn't tasted success his entire career in the NFL.

This. The Eagles are just a mess, I don't think it's on Nmamdi.

Still can be a great player IMO. The Eagles were playing him in a lot of zone IIRC, which was incredibly moronic, not to mention they had a former offensive line coach at DC when he got there.

Asomugha is still one of the best cover corners in the NFL. It was Philadelphia's terrible defensive scheme that put way too much pressure on their DBs that made that defense look like crap.

    The comments are great:

"Asomugha really likes to be alone. He likes to be alone so much that he refused to cover wide receivers during the game. Lucky for him, since he isn't agreeing to restucture his contract he'll be able to have alot more "me time" by himself."
