Reggie Bush had a decent game today. His yardage totals were nice, but he also made a few mistakes (dropped what coulda been a TD). I'm actually suprised the ESPN article mentioned that....

What he showed me today was the same thing that he showed me in college...that he is a dangerous scatback that can't be counted on as an every down back. You can line him up all over and use him in a variety of ways, but the last time I checked players like Micheal Pittman/Eric Metcalf/Brian Westbrook aren't worth #1 picks, and the contracts associated with being picked that high.

For those of you on his jock as the next great RB, please alert me when he starts getting the rock on every play and moving the chains like the great RB's I have seen play since I began watching football (Emmit, Barry, Faulk, Davis, etc). That kind of impact from a RB is worthy of a #1 pick.

With that being said, Mario didn't play like a #1 pick today either....

Perhaps. But I doubt folks in Hosuton would have been saying "gee, I wish they would have drafted Mario Williams, as they needed that one or two tackles. If anything, there might have been "Should have drafted Young" comments.

Unfortunately, Bush didn't have a bad day. And unfortunately, Williams did. This sort of comparison will go on throughout the season. The good news... all Williams has to do is start getting pressure on the opposing QB, or making tackles up and down the line, and contributing to the improvement in the Texan defense. Otherwise it will only get worse I am afraid...

This is it. I made it a point to focus on either Ryans or Williams each play and for the most part Ryans looked fine. Mario however looked awful. He was 1 on 1 for the majority of plays that I saw and he couldn't make any penetration whatsoever. He seemed ALOT weaker than I expected. It was extremely disappointing.

You've got to run the ball to win. I don't know what the box score says for our rushing yards, but we didn't get the yards on the ground when we needed it...we had no control in the game. That, and our safeties were terrible.

I wasn't impressed with Lundy. He seemed hesitant when hitting holes, and instead of picking up steady yards I thought he was looking for homeruns.

The playcalling after that first drive throughout the first half disgusted me. Third and eleven and we're running the ball ... not even a draw, just a flat out run. I don't care where you are on the field, you have to take a shot at that first down. What kind of confidence does that give the offense? And at the same time, the defense is back on the field about 2 minutes after they just got off.

Carr was okay. Seemed to be a little jumpy after a sack or two, which is understandable. If we can get the wheels in motion on this offense and the line I think Carr will be fine.

I can't really comment on Mario too much. It is hard to keep up with what he does on every play to judge him. Who knows what all he did that isn't showing up in the box score. I will say he looked terrible on the misdirection pitch that they showed the replay on. Looked unbelievably slow.

Overall I see improvement...playcalling needs to improve though. The defense, minus the safeties, looks like it will be respectable. Once again, the o-line is going to be the key to the offense (as it is for any team).

And that fact just makes you sing with glee doesnt it?

Yes, I thought the Texans could get it done but McNabb today was the QB 2 years ago when they went to the Super Bowl. They outplayed us. We got beat by a better team.

    Fixed......

If any other RB had his stats today with no TD's, and a dropped 6 at that, I'm sure you wouldn't say that RB played "great".

I know Reggie had a good game and that Mario didn't play well, but I also know that this is the first game of their careers. I was just making a point that excuses can be made and can be valid.

Like I posted, Peppers didn't have a single tackle in his first NFL game while Carr threw 2 TD's and everyone was thinking he was gonna be the next Marino. As Jeff posted, one game does not make a career.

I don't think anyone expects Bush to be a every down back. He doesn't have the right size or strength. But what he does have is the ability to break off big gains. Both as a runner and receiver. To *impact* games. So far, that is what he has done for New Orleans.

Dude, dont confuse him with the facts he's not listening anyway. He wants Mario and the Texans to fail so he can fling boogers and the middle finger and tell the Texans front office what idiots they are.

    How I saw it:

Credit where credit's due: Carr had a very strong game. High completion percentage, no INT, looked deep a couple times, got it to Moulds and Johnson rather than relying on dump routes. Only two moments that merited head shaking: tripping over his own two feet after taking the snap once, and audibling into a run when facing a full house blitz (3rd down in the 1st quarter).

Ryans is a stud. Period. Had 13 of our 59 tackles (12 solo, no one else had more than 7). Lightning quick on the ball and jaws of life grip.

Playcalling is superior to last year's, and Moulds is fantastic as a second option. Bad note: in the second half, the Eagles safeties started playing 15 yds off the line, correctly gambling that Houston wasn't going to strike beyond that distance with any regularity.

I wouldn't call Mario terrible, but as a number 1 pick, his play is woefully below expectations. He does demand double teams often (the number excuse given for him) and he did switch to the interior (DT) a couple of times. The Eagles ran away from his side for the most part. That said, he rarely could get past his man. To say that he's helping by demanding double teams only really has merit if the other side of the line takes advantage (that'd be a no, unless you want to credit Weaver's sack). Only 1 sack for the team, rarely gave McNabb trouble, discouraged running up the middle but easily contained on off tackle runs. The line essentially packed it in during the 4th. Mario: 3 tackles for the day. Nowhere near good enough as a number 1 pick.

Def Coordinater Richard Smith didn't impress me. Went into a lot of zone coverage, which is fine if the secondary has good awareness. We didn't, which meant we opened gaping holes that Philly recievers exploited several times. The safeties got caught behind the deep man more than once (inexcusable). Sanders was left on Stallworth despite getting clowned by him several times. No good reason why Dunta was not assigned to him all game. Philly repeatedly attacked Sanders (even with outside run plays) and enjoyed plenty of success.

Orr was also noticeably bad. Looked slow both physically and in his reaction time to the plays.

O-Line was "streaky" with their pass blocking and pathetic in their run blocking. Most of the 5 sacks came from tissue-paper blocking rather than Carr holding onto the ball.

Outlook: we're in for a rough opening month. If the O-Line can't set up the run, it doesn't matter if it's Lundy, Davis, or Bush in the backfield. A zone scheme may help hide our out-talented defense, but only if the secondary's learning curve improves in a hurry.

Good point. It should also be noted that Peppers finished that season with 12 sacks in 12 games.

Another interesting tidbit is that on the stat sheet, Peppers and Williams had very similar games today. Both had 3 tackles and no sacks. Peppers also had a pass deflection.

The best way I could describe this game is that there were a lot of positives (Carr played very well, Ryans is indeed a stud) and there was some status quo (terrible blocking, defense was not right and did not make adjustments).

I was impressed with Carr. He didn't look like the same guy from the preseason. He got the ball down field some. The long pass to AJ was a thing of beauty. The running game was disappointing. Philly did well to stop it and they do have a strong front 4. I still expected more and it certainly would have been a different game if there was more production from Morency and Lundy.

Still sucks to lose, but I can take something away from this game. There is improvement. Unfortunately, it only gets tougher next week with Indy.

The same ability Metcalf and Westbrook have. I don't think that impact is worth a #1 pick.

    look,

I supported the mario williams pick, was never for picking bush even before vince got in the draft,

    that being said,

today ain't the day to be talking about what he isn't going to do. it was a good start for him to day. just take it, and hope mario pans out. I watched metcalf at ut, he was never expected to be the player bush is. bush can be an every down back if n.o. wants him to. he's as big as the texans's backs.

that's not why I wasn't for picking him. I just think if mario pans out, he will have more value than a running back ever could. that being said, if bush plays like westbrook played today for the rest of his career, he will be worth a number one pick.

    Hey Texan fans,

Think Carr played bad check out this stat line for the mighty Drew Bledsoe.

16-33 for 246, 1 TD & 3 Ints. Yes, those preseason Super Bowl picks are looking more and more brilliant by the moment. Blablablah!

I wonder if T.O. is going to contract food poisoning this week?

The soap opera "As the star farts into the wind" LOL.

Titan & Cowboy fans you have alot to be proud of and when I figure out what IT is I'll be sure to let you know. LMAO!!!
