I know that back when I got my PS2 the exchange rates didnt help at my end.....but at the same time.....I know its its probably going to be like the petrol prices.

When the price of oil goes up.....the cost of petrol goes up. When the oil goes down....the price of pertol doesnt go down because it does work that way. :D

AFAIK, that's not how you count FLOPs, or at least I've never seen it counted like that. Besides the fact that every technical article on Cell confirmed that Cell was a 200+ GFLOPs processor, there is a message board I go to help fill me in on all the technical stuff. If only it was as easy as multiplying instructions by cores/VU's by clock cycle.

Here's an explanation of Cell from way back during the ISSCC:
IIRC, that was not counting the PE. Changing things from 8 SPE's to 7, and 4GHz to 3.2, I got around 179.2 for the SPE's. I can't find the place to calculate the PE exactly, but that's ~38.8 GFLOPs away from 218. The cores in the Xbox 360 are similar to the core in the PS3 in FLOPs, IIRC, and 38.8 times 3 ~116 GFlops, pretty close to what Microsoft gave as the FLOPs for the Xbox 360. I suck at all this stuff and don't understand it, so the small difference in numbers is probably me rounding or something like that. But go to Beyond3D or some other technical site, such as Real World Technologies, and they could probably explain it a lot better than I could. I was just trying to get close to that number.

I don't know anything about calculating GPUs though. I do think he may have lowballed those numbers too, although Nvidia claimed that one of there previous PC cards had a teraflop (definitely not true), so they do overrate their GPUs from time to time.

That's true, but I expected that since every console is pretty much in the same situation. In fact, the Xbox 360 should be the furthest along considering their launch timeframe. FWIW, it seems like most of the realtime stuff done on the PS3 is being done basically off of either two SLI 6800 Ultras, or a RSX prototype, with very little, if any, use of Cell. From Microsoft, I was expecting some great looking things just running at slow framerates, which would be fixed when the devs get final kits next month. But it seems like some of the games they're showing don't look very good, IMO, AND they have poor framerates. If they look that bad, don't show them.

This doesn't sound too strange to me. I know I said somewhere that I wouldn't doubt it if Sony sold the PS3 in Japan for $400+. This is maybe a little more than ~400, but it doesn't surprise me. If anything, I would guess the US price would rise to $350 (or why not $360 ;)), although I'm thinking they would still like to target the $300 price tag unless Microsoft can somehow sell its console for a higher price.

If they do the same in the UK as they did in the past ($300=300 UK pounds), then I'm guessing that the UK will be paying a pretty high price there as well. So yes, we should be lucky if Sony prices it in the $300-$400 price range. If Sony values the US market, I could see them taking a large loss here in the US and finding a way to drastically cut the costs of the PS3 down to acceptable levels. By that time, they would have made so much money of the PS2 and probably have started making some good money of the PSP, so they may be able to take the hit.

Of course, we may have to pay $50 for an extra controller, or $10 for an extra car in GT5...

MS may be trying to make a smart business move...but that doesn't mean their not p*****s. ;)

I don't believe that MS, by releasing early, are going to make much of a dent in those already firmly entrenched on Sony's side. Sure, there will be those...like yourself...who will buy both consoles. But, how many Sony fanboys are going to cross the line over to MS? Enough to make this a smart business move? I guess time will tell. Plus, it appears with MS's early release date...that they are having games' developer rush their games to meet the launch date AND they may not have a very good base of launch titles. I expect Sony will have a larger and better quality of launch titles. This strategy could even backfire for MS as, if the Sony console really is superior, people may decide to dump their XBox 360s(or let it collect dust) in favor of the PS3 depending on the game selection, graphics, etc. . This could impact the sales of XBox 360 games after the PS3 launch going forward.

I guess we will see how this plays out for the smart p*****s.

MS cannot win either way. They can only hope to obtain more market share but that is going to be difficult even with the early release...especially if everyone is raving about PS3 after E3 while XBox 360 is getting lower marks.

Anybody excited about the PSP. For a system thats only been out for 2 moths the only thing Sony mentioned in the press conference was that it can be used as a PS3 controler. Although I was expecting to hear a little more about the system, such as hardware (keyboard, web browser, GPS, TV), I'm pretty pumped about some of the games comming out. Madden, GTA, Pusuit Force (looks really cool), Infected, Coded Arms, and Socom all sound like great games. I'm still a little ticked about the lack of and price of the MS Pro Duo's, which I think is Sony delaying to sell more UMD movies in order to get more movie studio support, but regardless these games can't come quick enough. I'm picking up MVP Baseball for PSP tomorrow, and hope its as good as the console version. Plus for those watching G4 TV..isn't that Morgan Webb chick hot!

I would think that MS's plan by launching the console ahead of the others is not to win over the PS and Nintendo fanboys...but the casual or first-time gamers...those who are undecided about what system to buy. Because they can try all they want...the chances of them turning hardcore fans of other consoles onto Xbox is gonna be slim, cause they're already dedicated fans. But its that undecided...that's the key for them - I'm thinking - in releasing the 360 this year.

On G4 today, they said that they were much more impressed by what they have seen of the 360 on the floor than what they saw in the press conference. From the video that I saw, the press conference really didn't seem geared to show off what gamers will be getting out of the 360, like the PS3 press conference, instead talking about all of the other stuff that it can do.

Not everyone keeps their old systems, which themselves can be hard to find or expensive to replace.

There's no freakin way Sony will sell the PS3 for $400 while the XB360 will retail for $300. Thats a hundred dollar diffrence and the majority of consumer will buy the XB360 no matter which system is better and therefore causing 3rd party support to jump on the MS bandwagon. That would equal doom for Sony if they decided to do this and is a bad business decision to began with. When was the last time a game system cost more than $300 and succeeded? Thats right none...Neo-Geo was the last system that cost over $300 and was sold at a whopping $500 buck and the system was dead before it even began to take off. The only way the PS3 will sell for that much is if all 3 system cost that much as well, and given the fact that the XB360 will be out 6 month earlier than all others, they wouldn't hesitate to keep the price lower than everybody else.

MS knows better than to blow its wad at E3.

Word will get around & the console will be out earlier than the others. Sony is about to lose some more marketshare.

I worked a booth once in New Orleans at a sign-industry show. Across from our booth was a booth full of Japanese men in suits (none more than 4 feet tall) who were showing their product: a photo-booth machine that would spit out photos on stickers. Normally, I wouldn't expect any people to visit this booth - most of them didn't speak English, and they just seemed out of place.

But, they had hired some local model girls to work the booth. They would entice men to come to the booth and have their picture taken with the hot chicks and get some stickers. It was brilliant: their booth was constantly crowded.

Lesson learned: when working a trade show booth, hire some beautiful young girls, and the crowds will come.

IMO, MS has to have a great E3 if they want the Xbox 360 to do well. It will be coming out first and it has to convince people that it is worth buying in the fall and not some Xbox 1.5. If that means showing everything the have up their sleeve, then they must do that. Sony and/or Nintendo should not be the talk of E3; Microsoft should be.

FWIW, I've been reading that the Spring 2006 release of the PS3 is for the US launch. Whether or not the Japan launch is before that or if the PS3 launches in both places at once is not known though.

Following up on my earlier post about the PS3's price, apparently Bloomberg has other ideas about the console prices:
I don't see that happening just as much as I see the PS3 launching for $465, but that should explain how difficult it is to estimate prices right now.

As for the PDZ impressions, I'm happy to see that Rare has put together a great looking game because if PDZ really was as bad looking as it seemed last Thursday, they would probably become the worst developer studio in the world. Of course, like the IGN article points out, I don't see why Microsoft isn't showing something very impressive to the public. I was reading some impressions from the E3 floor at GA (Here), and some (not all) of the games were getting some bad impressions.

I wouldn't doubt that they have something impressive to show us. Here are some pics from Madden and FIFA that were shown behind closed doors, IIRC:

There is also an image of Live 2006, but it is massive, so just check out the link:

So it seems that maybe Xbox 360 isn't Xbox 1.5 behind closed doors, according to these images. Microsoft just needs to let that be known.

IGN's opinion on KIll Zone tech demo on the PS3- "Its too good to be a game"

This is just too damn good. There's no way, man. There's just no freaking way.

Something this amazing cannot be. It's a physical impossibility. I am incapable of eating the planet Jupiter with a plastic spoon and this game can't be real. It's way, way too awesome for life to handle it. Hell, I don't even think it can be CG. You know what? It probably doesn't even exist! I think we just imagined it, so let's just blindly carry on with our lives, eh? But then again...

If the Killzone 2 video shown at Sony's E3 2005 press conference was made entirely from the in-game engine and does indeed represent the power of PlayStation 3, look the hell out.

It begins with ISA forces rapidly descending down from a pristine sky onto an entrenched Helghast army that has taken hold of a now ruined city. Our eyes sharpened. Our hearts quickened. Our blood tingled. We could hear the battle cries of a thousand brave warriors throughout time ringing in our ears. Any b*stard that doesn't lay down and submit when we land is going to die and die damn hard. We're going to fly straight in there and kick the holy hell out of those dirty mutated sons of b****es.

As the clouds whip past and the stabilizing engines of our flying dropship fire to slow our fall, we're hit in the face by a heavy World War II sensation. Much like the battle hardened men who road bravely aboard Higgins Boats were ready to face the worst threat of our time, these fictional boys of the future are about to stride into the jaws of hell and rip the devil's tongue straight out of throat.

And so the oddly helmet-less heroes of the ISA descend through rocket and machine gun rounds, but not all of the boats make it. One gets tagged by a stray missile and careens right into a nearby building, lighting up the world with brilliant streak of burning death and then darkening it with a wretched plume of deep black smoke. The dropship we're focused on does land, however, and our hero loads a grenade shell into his weapon and leaps over the rail to kill the hell out of the enemy.

    The scene is chaos.

    Good Lord
Heavily scripted action governs progression as the men shoot their way through enemies at all angles. Up and down, people are dying and the landscape becomes littered with corpses, the wounded, the broken, and the shattered remnants of civilization. It's an utterly astonishing site of horror that combines the sharp grit of Saving Private Ryan with the distinct futuristic clarity of one of StarCraft's many stylized CG battles. As the demo rolls on we're treated to flamethrowers, barrages of missiles, vicious death scenes and elaborately laid out firefights. It's amazing, but perhaps a bit too amazing.

Look, we want it to be real. We honestly do. If it is, we'd feel complete -- whole. But we have suspicions we simply cannot shake.

In August of 2004 this editor visited the offices of Guerilla in Amsterdam. There team members admitted that Killzone 2 development was well underway, but that they did not intend to release on PlayStation 3 and that they had, in fact, not even been provided with PS3 development kits at the time. That means that between August of 2004 and May of right now, Guerilla received tools and made a game for a system they knew pretty much nothing about -- a game that is as ridiculously polished as this one, no less. I don't care how fantastic of a developer your company might be, something like that just doesn't happen.

We're inclined to mistrust Killzone 2's gameplay legitimacy even further because of the way the video plays out. No shooter in existence features characters that do exactly the right thing at exactly the right time all the time. It seems as if the entire Killzone 2 showing was like a wish that did not waver, not even once. Then there's the way the control seems suspiciously fast to be done on analog sticks. The circumstantial evidence is just too much to ignore, you know?

All that being said, I cannot in good faith tout Killzone 2 as the best looking game ever because I really don't think it's a real game yet. But it sure is one hell of a CG sequence that, if in anyway happens to be representative of the final product, shows us what next-generation shooting should be like.

We've got the full movie and a few pieces of early art assembled in our media page below. Check those out when you a get a chance and marvel at what great scripting and proper art direction can accomplish for a game.

Gears Of War on XB360- Looks like it could rival Kill Zone.
