Yeah, 3% body fat.... not sure that's even possible to sustain for an extended amount of time on a human body much less for an athlete to be at that percentage and be able to survive a game much less a full season.

Athletes need a decent amount of good fats to have something to burn when they are working out of playing. Its what fuels the engine. Best friend of mine has a PHD in Nutrition Science and says that when an endurance athlete is training they should be between 7 and 10%. I'm sure some cyclists have gotten down to 2% at certain points of the year when training hard but that is tough to sustain over a long period of the year.

So maybe Dwight was somewhere between 3 to 5% when he was training and dieting hard during the preseason, but I don't that see that as sustainable throughout the season.

Also, might seem like a dumb question coming even though I consider myself pretty educated but why can they eat their sandwiches on sourdough bread?

I usually just go with a Gluten free wheat, or rye bread for my sandwiches, but maybe I'm missing something.

This is a great article! I'm a strong believer in healing foods but it hasn't always been that way for me. I'm cheap...a miser and always looking for a deal or bargain so I tended to buy cheap foods and fast foods. What a mistake!

My transition started when my wife began employment for the grocery chain mentioned in the article (corporate office in the IT dept). Part of being an employee there they provide education on the foods they sell and the overall philosophy of the company. I wouldn't even shop there at first because of $. That was 14 years ago and I've never looked back. We shop there exclusively now. I'm now on the wrong side of 40 and have perfect health according to my doctor that I now go to once every three years.

The problem with the fad diets is people attempt to simplify them which leads to misinterpreting them. My brother-in-law took the Atkins diet to the extreme eating mostly meats. His body couldn't process them after a while and he ended up having gallbladder surgery...and he is still way over weight.

The best diet is a well rounded diet incorporating raw foods, proteins and carbs in a ratio that works best for your body. Everyone is different. Exercise is very important!! Enough...back to basketball.

No way Dwight has 3% BF.
Bruce Lee trained his whole life and at his BF peak he reached 1%.
This caused a simple painkiller to stop his brain and kill him...

Exactly. Fat has a purpose, and a body fat percentage of 3% is unhealthy. The reason fat is villified is because we have folks with 40% or 50% body fat which is not healthy.

It is all speculation and genetics play a part, but less than 10% is probably not healthy. Fat can help you recover in famine and disease, and it also protects your muscles and organs from trauma.

    1. Bruce Lee was never 1% body fat.

    2. He had an allergic reaction to the painkiller which caused his brain to swell. That's what he died from.

Bruce was at 1% body at the time of his death when he dropped nearly 25 pounds.

When he was in Hong Kong, Ting Pei gave Bruce a painkiller suited for a ~30 years old woman which has the body fat of around 30%.

When Bruce took this, he experience overdose of Meprobamate. This is what many people thinks took Bruce's life.

Not saying you didn't read that but I'm calling shenanigans on whoever wrote it.....that seems like an oddly specific prerequisite for a pill

Okay, what seems more likely to you:

    A. Bruce Lee took a painkiller that was chemically designed specifically for a 30 year old woman with 30% body fat and he overdosed on it because he had too little body fat...

    or...

    B. He had an allergic reaction

That's crazy. I would have thought that aside from eating out and drinking some nights, these guys would be on a strict diet of stuff like, chicken, beans, veggies, fruit, etc. Healthy, high protein fare... 24 hershey bars a day?? That would probably kill me in a matter of weeks! Granted I'm half Dwight's size, but still.

They said the equivalent of 24 Hershey bars. You'd be shocked at how much sugar a large fountain coke has. I think one large coke or mountain dew is something like 3 or 4 candy bars. Plus all the starch you eat basically turns into sugar.

    Sugary drinks are a killer.

Most competitive body builders come into contest at around 4%. They cannot maintain that for long and go through hell to get there. They walk around feeling half dead for the last few weeks before the show.

Sorry, I don't believe any basketball players are walking around at that weight either in season or during the offseason.

More of dieting than exercise. I know a few people who rides on a long ride after that they go to Starbucks which kills what they've been doing earlier.

You're 100% right, I'd add that pro bodybuilders use a different assortment of drugs to achieve their physique, including thyroid hormone to try to keep their metabolism elevated during periods of "leaning out". People throw all kinds of crazy numbers around regarding BF.
I train 2 pro beach volleyball players that are absolutely ripped, I'm talking veins showing in the abs and they are around 7.5-8.5%. I can guarantee that to eye they look like they're 5%

    For real.

I typed a short bit about thyroid hormones, diuretics and androgens but deleted it when I remembered that this is a forum where people think the fact that D. Wades' face is fuller now than when he was 19 means he is on HGH.

    Not the most educated crowd.

Good timing on this thread -- interesting read and DH's interview last night about the subject and how much better he feels since the change was good to hear.

What did DH mean last night?

He said he changed his diet again during this season. Early part of the season he was getting tired before the end of games; he started eating more so he would feel stronger at the end of games.

Is he eating more of the whole foods or did he start incorporating "prohibited" foods once again?

The obvious follow-up question is "Dwight, are you farting less / are your farts less smelly now?"
