Because trades are actually negotiations. Each side has a starting price & counter offers until a happy medium is reached or 1 side walks away from the table. I see the happy medium being something like:

Howard & Turk or Howard & (2 of JRich/Duhan/Davis) for
    Either KMart/Lamb, any 2 of Morris/PPat/White/Jones, Toronto draft pick & a 2nd round pick.

As someone else has mentioned, this trade won't happen until the Lin/Asik offer sheets are settled.

This article from Aldridge is just the Yin to the ESPN article's Yang. The deal won't get done if we only have to give up one young prospect and take on one bad deal (otherwise Morey would have already said yes) and it won't get done if we have to take on 4 bad contracts and remove every good young player from the roster. The final deal will be in the middle, and what we are seeing is each side leaking their opening offers.

If this article is accurate then Scola would not have needed to be amnestied, and if the deal was really dead then the Rockets would not be spending a lot of time chasing down Olajuwon in order to have fairly in depth conversations with him while he is in Jordan.

The deal is going to get done sometime between now and August 3rd (when Donatus is able to be traded), and it is going to have the Rockets giving up the two future 1st rounders, Lamb, one other young player and taking back 3 bad Orlando contracts (I'm guessing obviously, but that is the mean of the two insane articles leaked by "sources" over the course of the last 24 hours, and it is the most reasonable conclusion to this whole thing).

In the meantime, all the articles and national attention being written about my Rockets is very entertaining.

At the end of the offseason the Rockets are getting a franchise center either in Bynum or Howard. Right now our priorities are on Howard because he is the better of the two.

    On the money again. :p

Carmelo wanted one place, Nuggets were able to squeeze everything out of NY, and he signed an extension.

Deron Williams had a year still left on his deal at the time of trade I believe.

Chris Paul opted in with LA when he was traded.

All those guys non-rentals. Dwight so far, would be a rental.

Sounds like both teams are trying to get the Howard trade done through the media. First it was Orlando leaking what they wanted, and when Houston balked, Orlando played it nonchalant and said they were willing to wait it out.

Now Houston has leaked what they are willing to offer, and has said no trade is being discussed “at the moment.”

I think Houston has the benefit of time on its side. The longer Orlando takes to agree to a deal, the weaker their position becomes.

First, It becomes more and more obvious that the number of potential trading partners decreases. Especially after Brook Lopez signed his max contract with Brooklyn preventing them for doing a deal with Orlando.

Second, and I don't know how much of a difference this will make, but as Houston finalizes the deals with the Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik, (provided New York and Chicago don't match) the less salary-cap space Houston has to take on Orlando’s bad contracts.

I also think Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik are better players for the money than Hedo Turkoglu, Jason Richardson and Chris Duhon.

The amount we are offering Jeremy Lin and Omer Asik ($25 million each) is not that much more than what Hedo Turkoglu ($23.4 over two years) and Jason Richardson ($18.6 million over three years) have on their contract, but Jeremy and Omer fit into the teams long plans better than Hedo or Jason.

Lets see how much longer this plays out in the press before Orlando fans start getting p*ssed off about getting less and less for Dwight and Orlando management just pulls the trigger.

One thing to keep in mind is that while Hedo Turkoglu and Jason Richardson are not bad players, they are overpaid. Morey always finds a way to offload these types on another team.

Say what you want about Morey, but the man is patient and knows how to play poker. I don’t see Orlando getting what they want and while the final deal will be a comprise, it will probably look closer to what the Rockets offered.

I'm not even sure D(umb)avid A(ss)ldridge believes what he writes . . . I think he gets paid by the word and writes whatever his 9 year old kid tells him to write.

There is no doubt we have the best shot at DH12 - patience - gonna get him !!!

The Magic have an 86yo owner who wants to win a championship. Bynum puts them on that path quicker than Houston's offering.

Not a chance. The Magic do not want a 1 year rental in Bynum whom obviously no matter the circumstance has no confidence they can build
a solid core around him to be a contender.

On top of that the Lakers do not have the draft picks needed to appease the Magic in a trade. It's doubtful they find a team more than happy to take horrid contracts or role players to make this even worth considering.

We are the frontrunners as of NOW and it's gonna take a whollllllleeeee lot to take us out of postion to net Dwight.

That's why I say, take as long as you like Morey & Co. we have all day too.

Trading Lowry got them a likely lottery pick which is probably the best trade chip they have.

Letting Dragic walk wasn't about money, it was about roster flexibility (i.e a player option )

Yes it would have been better to get a pick for Scola. It would also be better if I won this week's lottery but unfortunately wishing it to happen doesn't make it come true. They've shopped Scola since the end of the season and there's no takers. The complicating factor is that Houston didn't want to take back any salary. That means that the other team either has to have cap space or a large trade exception. None of those teams wanted to use their cap space/TE on Scola.

I would be mad that we amnestined Scola for no reason if we dont get DH. I cant believe Scola is gone and DH trade talk is still on. Hennigan is a joke.

I really hope the deal boils down to:

    1. Trade

    Houston Trades:
    - Kevin Martin
    - Patrick Patterson
    - Marcus Morris
    - Toronto 1st Round Pick
    - 2 2nd Round Picks

    Orland Trades:
    - Dwight Howard
    - Glen Davis

    2. Free Agency

    - Resign Courtney Lee
    - Pray Lin and Asik are not matched

    3. Cuts

    - Remove all Non-Guaranteed contracts from previous trades as well as anyone not named below. Send your 2 best prospects to the D-League.

    2012 - 2013 Roster

PG - Jeremy Lin / Scott Machado
SG - Courtney Lee / Jeremy Lamb
SF - Chandler Parsons / Royce White
PF - Donatas Motiejunas / Glen Davis / Terrence Jones
    ..C - DWIGHT HOWARD / Omer Asik

    If Morey pulls this off. . . . . . . .

That's all I can do cause words won't do that lineup justice!!

I don't think that will happen. If they wait until the trade deadline, they will end up gambling on what they can get in return.

Their barging position becomes increasingly week since Dwight has stated he will only sign an extension with one team and I don't think the Orlando Magic GM (Rob Hennigan) wants to pay Brook Lopez max money.

Rob Hennigan wants to rebuild and said he wants cap space, young talent and draft picks. Hard to get that with what the Nets are able to offer.

Very few teams have what the Magic (Rob Hennigan) want or are willing to gamble on trading for Dwight without an extension.

Now if Dwight were to say he was willing to sign an extension, then the Magic are able to bargain from a position of strength and thus be able to ask for more.
