In many threads people keep saying he will just outright sign with Brooklyn. I'm just trying to have the exact numbers over 5 years to point out how stupid that idea is.
Can you do the math to factor in his better shoe deal in Brooklyn v Houston? In case people ask me if that could offset the $100m gap.
they just had a RocketsCast on the Rockets official website and I wrote up a summary of what was talked about... You can see the summary by going here: http://bbs.clutchfans.net/showthread.php?t=223214
Cannot nail it down precisely, max contract in 3 years depends on league revenue and cap #s. Rough estimate: $60M, and that's assuming he doesn't get hurt during his 3 year run, which could very well leave him making a diminished amount after year 3, or maybe even nothing at all. Also, remember he'll be 30 years old by the time his 3 year run is over. He's not giving up that money to go to Brooklyn, shoe deal or no shoe deal. If he was willing to do it, he would not have "opted in" at the deadline and would be in Broolyn already after leaving whatever team he was traded to as a FA and signed a 4 year contract with the Nets. Now people are saying he' gonna give up EVEN MORE MONEY and take on EVEN GREATER RISK in order to move to Brooklyn?
I'm pretty sure Murray is working hard on a deal for Scola that helps everyone. If not, amnesty wouldn't be so bad so Scola can , as much as I hate it, go to the spurs where he'd be super happy.
So even if he were to double his endorsement money in the big apple , it's still not what he could earn here,if he committed to it.
Next offseason...the real main threat for Dwight will most likely be Dallas and Portland...Dallas with an aging Dirk Why Dwight might not even go to Dallas...No financial advantage...Staying with Houston will net him more money and an extra year of financial security... Dallas' biggest questions will be who to surround with him and Dirk...so its essentially restarting this year...so he may not see any rewards until 2014-2015(in terms of playoff success and possible Title)...by that time Dirk is like 36-37...much different player... Same questions in regards to finances...he cant just join a established team like the Lakers or NJ...there is no way that they can maneuver their cap space situation...what about the Clips??? nope not even there...Knicks...nope.. So out of all the big city markets that Dwight is looking at...there is no financial room.(unless ofcourse he is willing to play for 3-5 mil...which in my opinion is career suicide!) Lastly...what so many of the posters forget to acknowledge is that Morey is the master of selling broken parts as prime real-estate...(ie Juwan Howard, Tracy McGrady) and he is a master at acquiring picks for tremendous value...Look for him to get another few picks via S/T for Lee... With all this being said...Daryl is going all in for Dwight...he is that important...forget thhat he is a nutcase, egotistical maniac...but being in Houston is actually his best option both financially and career wise... Finally, Dwight really should take a really good look at himself for re-uping on the contract with the Magic, he could have just accepted the trade to Houston last trade deadline..and been a free agent, and gone where he wanted to...but by waiting another year...he officially cant join a pre-existing power house!
And even if jvg was right about the shoe deal paying more if in NY or LA, if you use the Rose deal as a yardstick, the amount is spread out over say 10 years, the additional amount for playing in NY/LA still probably wouldn't add up to what is lost by not getting the full bird rights Max deal.
If he really wants to leave he'll make back that lost year on the following max contract in his prime for a big man (30 yo). An extra year of security or one year earlier to lock into his next and last max contract.
Players have pretty much always opted for the extra $ and year worth of security over any kind of "what if" back-end calculations which are murky at best. Injuries and diminished athleticism are just too big of a risk (especially with Dwight coming off back surgery and being reliance on this athleticism). More specifically, we know that one guy strongly prefers an extra year of securty: Dwight Howard. How do we know? If he didn't care, he would have refused to opt in, gotten traded to Houston, then opted out of the last year of his contract this summer and signed a 4 year deal outright with the Nets already.
Howard would do it tho. He can make that money back by the rumored bonus players get in shoe deals when they are playing in a major market like NY or LA. I'm telling y'all....dude is gonna walk just on principle.
