Dwight inspired by Kobe and praises him

Lakers center Dwight Howard gave more praise to Kobe Bryant on Tuesday night's Time Warner Cable SportsNet special titled "Connected With...Dwight Howard."

"I do appreciate what [Bryant's] doing," said Howard to host Kevin Frazier. "We've talked all year. We've had conversations on the bus rides and the planes just about how to become that icon that I want to be."

Howard said Bryant has helped him become a better player.

"He's just pushing me," said Howard. "I need somebody to push me.... He's the guy who can show me because he's been through every single thing. One thing I can admire about him is the fact that he has five rings."

The Lakers center also noted that widespread adulation can lead to laziness in others, but not with Bryant.

"You stop doing the things that you did to get there but for him, he hasn't done that," Howard said. "He's in the gym every day. He's getting his treatment. He's in the weight room. He's getting his shots up and that shows greatness."

Howard also noted he's still learning from Bryant's ability to ignore criticism.

"I just have to learn how to just have tunnel vision," he said. "I see Kobe, he doesn't allow what anybody says affect who he is as a player because he knows who he is -- and you know I'm learning that. I'm learning how to do that."

"When you look at a guy like Kobe, he doesn't care about nothing but going out there and playing hard," said Howard. "That's a lesson that a lot of us have to learn."

Howard has also taken on some of Bryant's habits off the court.

"I know Kobe has a lot of energy. I know that he changed his diet," said Howard. "I've done the same thing."

"I think this is a blessing for me, to experience the stuff that I've experienced this year. It's just going to make me a better man and a better player," said Howard. "Just from watching Kobe — this has been great for me. I wouldn't have it any other way."

There was hardly ever a chance to begin with...

He is in line to be the face of possibly the most high profile sports franchise there is, he can live in Los Angeles, and not to mention the extra 30 million he'll be getting by staying.

It just shows how extremely difficult to get star player. There're only a few, and every team tried hard to find or keep them. 10 good players wouldn't get you one star nowadays.

I think this is a good step for Dwight. Admitting your weaknesses is a major step towards getting better. I know Dwight is in the NBA Fan's doghouse right now, but let's not forget he was a fan favorite 2 years ago. Hopefully he turns it around (for the Rockets)

I wouldn't really read too much into what he said..... because he is Dwight Howard. This is the same guy that lied to his coaches face claiming everything was good.... the same guy that claimed he didn't want out of Orlando.

Dwight changes his mind all the time.

This makes me sad. Was hoping he was miserable so we have a shot at him. Here's hoping Kobe gets back on the floor and makes him miserable again.

You won't be impressed unless a dude coming off back surgery takes a bunch of scrubs and an over the hill Steve Nash and Metta World Peace to the Finals on his first year with a new team?
