Catching alleys and dunking: Yao < Howard
Passing: Yao > Howard
Strength: Howard > Yao

Basically equal, but Yao gets the edge because of his versatility in scoring and his ability to create his own shot.

 

Yao ming help the rockets organization makes way more $$ and that is exactly why he is the ****.

what a joke/dumbass you are. how are you gonna say you love yao and call him out on stupid points like that. you just said you love him to avoid people talking about this stupid ass thread you started. and don't even get me started on the free throw shooting. cuz i'd rather have dwight goint to the free throw line 20 times to yao's 10 or less. trust me. don't say you love the guy and not back the great things he brings to this squad.

 

Before yao came, we had the 4th biggest franchise interms of money rev in the league. now were ranked 6th. so the story of yao making us a ton of cash is overrated.

 

When Yao got here were coming off of Olajuwon, Drexler, Barkley, Pippen, and Franchise wearing Rockets red(or blue). Also, 2 chips didnt hurt us either.

Our overall share hasnt changed much, but much more of it is the chinese market that we dominate.

 

Maybe, but it hasnt been that big of a jump. some make it as if yao is kobe like money spinner.

Personally, having the debate of who you'd take, Yao or Dwight, isn't a bad place to be in. While I think this Rockets team would be better with Dwight, I think Yao is more respectable and more representable for this team. If Yao can keep up his current pace, then there's no reason to even discuss this.

 

You answer the question then, if Yao is this super skilled guy who's getting double teamed ad nauseum and Howard is a no skill having bum then why does Yao only average .2 assists more per game than Howard?

Your last point to show Yao is a superior player is a quote from Jeff Van Gundy, Yao's ex coach? Are you kidding me? That's like quoting Mark Cuban on why Dirk Nowitzki is a better player than Yao.

 

I don't understand how people say Dwight Howard is still a better center than Yao. If he was 1/2 as dominant as Shaq was, then I would understand, but he's not.

Shaq and Yao have post moves, except for his rookie year.

Shaq and Yao draw double and triple teams, and get fronted regularly.

Shaq was a great shotblocker. Yao and Dwight are equal shotblockers.

Shaq was a great passer and had a good basketball IQ. Yao is an okay passer and has a decent basketball IQ. Dwight has neither bball IQ and he can't pass.

Shaq and Yao have excellent footwork. Dwight is a vertical run up and down athlete, not a great lateral and coordinated athlete.

Shaq was a great post defender except against Hakeem in before 97. Yao is a very effective one-on-one post defender. Dwight can't hold position, and falls for every fake, and fouls a lot.

Shaq and Dwight are equal rebounders. Yao is not near as good as these 2, but is not a bad rebounder either.

Dwight and Yao are both better Pick n' Roll defenders. Shaq was just horrible in this aspect of his defense.

Dwight is much less injury prone than Shaq and Yao. Shaq never worked hard in the offseason after he won titles, but he was still dominant in the playoffs.



With all this said, Dwight is not 1/2 as good as his only comparison, Shaq. Another guy who relied heavily on dunking, athleticism, brute strength, and intimidation. Shaq, relied on all of those things but he still had skills to fall back on.

Dwight Howard is a microfracture, ACL, or achilles tendon surgery away from being a much less effective player in the NBA. He relies soooo much on his athlitecism. Even Amare added a 20 ft jumper and a free throws to his game. If D. Howard has a major injury, he'll become Jaamaal McGloire.

Yao on the other hand is full of skills. If Yao were to have a major injury, he could still be a Rik Smits, Sabonis, or at the worst an Ilgauskus type of center who can still produce offensively because of the high skill he possesses. Yao doesn't rely solely on athleticism. He will still have post moves, he will still have a jumper, and he will still have his smarts.


Yao can be a very effective NBA player until he is 35 or so, barring chronic injures. Dwight, even without injuries will see a sharp decline in overall production between 27 and 30. After 9-12 years in the league, he's not going to get every rebound, he won't block many shots, his vertical will decrease by a few inches. His speed and stamina will definetily go south. He will not be able to just dunk over people.

I bet people could NEVER imagine Shawn Kemp or Chris Webber losing athleticism and becoming limited players. These guys had a great skill set, and it still happened to them. Even KG, who could do everything on the court, lost a little bit the last couple of years, but he relied heavily on his jumper and basketball IQ (most noticably on defense).


Dwight better learn some skills, before he becomes another Jonathan Bender,Olawakandi, Theo Ratliff or Jaamall McGloire, because his athleticism won't last forever. Hopefully injury won't take it away first, but age will catch up to him. This is why Yao will be productive much longer than him, and is greater than Dwight now. The skill set is that much better. Even Shaq had a MUCH greater skillset than D. Howard, which should be an alarming sign to Magic fans. Dwight has no "backup plan".
