If only Yao was a few inches taller, he would be throwing it down on everybody in the league!

    why would anyone chose Howard?

Yao comes with a Yaoming soldier, Howard doesnt have his own personal soldier

I can honestly say Howard is the best center in the NBA based on the fact that he outrebounds Yao by 3.5 boards per game, outshoots Yao from the field by a huge percentage, has never missed a single game in the league, has led his team past the first round of the playoffs, and is 5 years younger than Yao.

    Howard at 22 years old

    21.7 pts/game, 14.2 rebs/game, 59.9 FG%, 2.2 blocks/game

    Yao at 22 years old

    13.5 pts/game, 8.2 rebs/game, 49.8 FG%, 1.8 blocks/game

    Yao at 28 years old

    22 pts/game, 10.8 rebs/game, 50.7 FG%, 2 blocks/game

Some of these posts are hilarious. Some of you actually think it's better for a player to score 22 points per game at 50% shooting than it is to score 21.7 points per game at 59% shooting.

    Then stuff like this...

Dwight Howard was on the 2nd team All-NBA Defensive team last year as a 22 year old. If Yao ever made 2nd team defense you'd be calling him the second coming of Olajuwon.

Dude is clearly not improving a all.

    2004: 12 pts/game, 10 rebs/game, 52.0 FG%
    2005: 15.8 pts/game, 12.5 rebs/game, 53.1 FG%
    2006: 17.6 pts/game, 12.3 rebs/game, 60.3 FG%
    2007: 20.7 pts/game, 14.2 rebs/game, 59/9%

I really enjoyed this one though. Let's show how stupid this comparison is now why don't we.

    http://www.basketball-reference.com/fc/h2h_finder.cgi?request=1&p1=mingya01&p2=okurme01

    Mehmet Okur 8 wins, 29.8 mpg, 15.8 ppg, 46.4% fg%, 37.1% 3pfg%, 81.5% ft%, 7.2 rpg (2.0 orpg), 1.2 apg, .8 spg, .5 bpg, 1.8 to/g

    Yao Ming 5 wins, 28.8 mpg, 15.5 ppg, 51.7 fg%, 73.1 ft%, 7.5 rpg (2.1 orpg), .8 apg, .3 spg, 2.2 bpg, 3 to/g

The superstar, Mehmet Okur, taking it to Yao Ming!! HOLY COW!!

Eh... yes, Dwight Howard is a better player despite the head to head totals in his games against Yao, a few of which happened when Howard was still a teenager.

oh please, comet tried to play it off and deny the fact that Yao owns Dwight Howard every single time they play head-to-head. I remember last season when a bunch of fools here are jumping on the Dwight Howard bandwagon. After Yao owned Dwight again like Dwight is his step-child, everybody jumped off that bandwagon quickly!

Seriously though, just watch. Dwight Howard is going to end up like a Shawn Kemp. Shawn Kemp was way better than Dwight Howard.

Just accept the fact, pinky boy. Yao is the best center in the NBA whether you like it or not. So get over it. =)

Dwight is more fun to watch than Yao. That's why his dunks are on Sports Center every night. Yao Ming does what it takes to win us ball games. He demands double teams in the post and can be the focal point of our offense, unlike Dwight. Yao's impact has not been reflected on the box score all these years b/c his pass outs lead to other passes which ultimately lead to open 3s.

Head to head, it's no competition. Dwight cannot guard Yao Ming...not because he's a poor defender, but b/c Yao is the better center. Dwight is pure, raw talent and can overtake Yao Ming on the center list when he actually develops some post game, aside from his hook shots and monster dunks. UNTIL he does that, Yao Ming will always be a step above him.

Dwight is allready a much better rebounder and shotblocker kemp ever was. kemp was a better shooter and had better handles. plus kemp was a much better free throw shooter. overall dwight is on par if not better then what kemp was. in his abslout prime dwight will be much better then kemp and better then the current yao. but right now yao is better.
    Now yao

    In 2 years time dwight

No, I pointed out that head to head stats don't necessarily mean anything and they mean even less when one of the players is a teenager. You can cry and whine all you want about the comparison but the fact is that Yao is one foot injury away from having his career become a gigantic question mark.

If Yao demands all these double teams in the post and is the focal point of the offense then why does he average exactly .2 more assists per game over his career than Howard? Howard has no skills, he doesn't demand a double team, the guy's a no skill having bum, and yet Yao only averages .2 more assists per game over his career? That's the best argument you've got? Seriously?

I've already shown the problem with using head to head matchups. Dwight is not a poor defender, in fact as I mentioned above he was 2nd Team All-NBA Defensive team last year. Not only that, Howard was 1st team All-NBA last year. Yao has never been either of those. Pay attention much?

Everyone has their preference in what they would like in their center. I want a center who if they put a body on them at the end of games, he can still be an offensive threat. Dwight Howard took his team out of the first round in the east and at end of games Turkoglu was the go-to-guy not Howard.

You would take the 59% shooting over the 50%, I would prefer the opposite. Hakeem Olajuwon shot 51% for his career because of the versatility of offensive moves. If they took the paint away, he had the fade-away. I would prefer a more all-around player who you can go-to on offense than someone who shoots 59% but not being able to be a go-to-guy because their main offensive move is the dunk.

I think the only reason this is a question is because of Yao's health.

I personally could care less who the best center in the NBA is. There isn't even an award for that.

Yao is closer to an NBA Championship than Dwight Howard. This is all that matters

To your first point: call me the first time you see Dwight getting double-teamed, never mind getting double-teamed before he gets the ball. Yeah, that's right - some coaches feared Yao enough that they doubled him consistently last year before he even could get the ball.

Random NBA coaches opinion >>>>>>> stats

Regarding win share. The funny (or funky) thing about this stat is that its dependent on your +/- rating, which in turn is highly dependent on how good your backup is. Yao had one of the best post defenders of all time backing him up last year. Quick - who was the backup for Mehmet Okur?

It comes back to what JVG said about Yao and Tracy - he said that they were two of the greatest offensive distorters in the game. Nobody will EVER say that about someone who gets 60% of his points from dunks created by other players or from offensive rebounding.

Btw, Dwight will continue to get dominated by Yao until he develops an 18 foot jumper and some dribble drive moves to go with it.

What does this post accomplish on a Rockets forum? That's what I just don't get.... I mean, you're not going to win the respect of Dwight here especially when you say he's better than Yao.. Nobody here is going to go with it, 95% of this forum is going to go for Yao... I don't understand why someone would make a thread like this in a Rockets fanbase.
