I believe it's because he took off very far from the rim and it's supposed to give the allusion that he's flying. I'm highly dubious that he intended to do a foul-line layup.
Whatever, so much for technicality. I just thought it was entertaining televison, full stop. Who cares. I laughed and I had fun and I will still give him a 50.
I think it's pretty obvious that his intention was to jump from as far out as possible, go horizontal in the air as if flying to the basket like Superman, and then DUNK the ball...all while dressed like Superman. It was less about the dunk itself, and more about the theme and the show of it all. Unfortunately, that's what the dunk contest has become. Dunks themselves seem to matter less than what the guy is wearing, or how funny his post-dunk celebration is. Spoiler Spoiler And it's not impressive to me that he threw the ball into the basket. It happens all the time when people can't quite get to the rim on a dunk. In other words, it's not on purpose. If it's not on purpose, it's pretty much an accident, and I'm not impressed by accidents. By the way, I don't understand how calling this a "non-dunk" is hating. I like Dwight Howard! I liked Dwight's dunks! But this attempt is so over hyped it's ridiculous.
So if a player (Yao, Dikembe come to mind) shoots a 3 or 4 foot hookshot and propel the ball straight down into the basket (no arch) then it's a dunk to you. Nice logic.
Yup overrated dunk and that is why this dunk contest will probably be whack this year. Dwight Howard - Overrated Slam Dunk Contest participant Nate Robinson - Should not be in it. Rudy Fernandez - Should not be in it. Rudy Gay - Disappointed last time he was in it.
A hook shot of the variety I mentioned is definitely propelled downward with force. Are you saying we now have a degree of force that's necessary to call it a dunk? I suppose you would say that Hakeem dunks at 3:34 in this video, according to your logic, right? Or maybe he didn't use enough force for you...? <object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/Pk0MPyiJBbc&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/Pk0MPyiJBbc&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowscriptaccess="always" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
The problem with some of Dwight dunks is you have to see the replay to get the Wow effect. Like when he put the sticker on the backboard. That takes away from the dunk. Only 1 dunk he did impressed me instantly and that was when he came from behind the backboard and dunked.
I liked the dunks from Dwight Howard (the sticker and the superman) for the creativity, I like that about a dunk contest the creativity of the players, because they now have to do it with props, because almost all dunks without props are made, and now they are boring. the gerald green dunks were underrated, I liked them a lot too.
I would crack up laughing if Dwight put on the bird outfit and dunked. I think that would be pretty clever and highly entertaining.
at 3:34 I think it's a dunk attempt which he awesomely makes even with the hard foul. No one was fouling Howard though last year teehee! Maybe if someone was out there fouling him that would make it a bit more impressive.
You're right. It was an attempt on which he ended up throwing the ball down into the basket without ever getting near the rim. As a result, no one in their right mind would ever say that Hakeem actually dunked that shot, unless they were trying to build an argument for Dwight's "dunk" of course.
The Goat invented that. http://basketball.suite101.com/article.cfm/earl_quotthe_goatquot_manigaults_story
