I'm looking to buy a DVD upconverter so my 400+ DVD collections do not look like total crap on a HDTV. I have a Samsung blu ray player but it does not upconvert DVDs that well. What is the best DVD upconverter on the market these days? Does anyone know if any DVD upconverter model has the same chipset that the old Toshiba HD DVD players used? Those seemed to do wonders upconverting DVDs.

    Thanks for any inputs/suggestions.

    Thanks.

Well maybe not the best ... $3800 is little steep for me. :D

I'm looking more for something around $100 to $200 that does a relatively good upconverting job. Maybe I should dig around for some overstock HD DVD players.

Keep an eye on Woot.com. They sell them about once a month, cheap. In fact, they had one last week. :)

I just bought a Sony DVP-NS710H -- works great and it was only 70 bucks.

+1 on an Oppo player. I set the Oppo DVD player to up-convert to 720P (the native resolution of my TV and my projector) and project DVDs onto a 92" screen. It looks good to me and my wife. Of course, the quality of the DVD print does make a difference...

I just thought of something.... you said you had a BluRay player. I always heard they upconverted DVDs pretty well. Have you checked the settings on that BluRay player? Make sure it is set to up-convert regular DVDs and that the output is the proper format for your TV.

Thanks for all the input. I looked around a little and it seems that Oppo players get pretty good reviews from everybody. ALso it seems that the oppo players are region-free (is this true?) Another question I have is does the Toshiba xd players have the same chipset as the Toshiba HD DVD players?

The Samsung blu-ray player I have is a BDP-1400. It's a pretty decent blu ray player and it does upconvert DVDs to "1080p", but I don't think the picture quality is really 1080p. My friend has a Toshiba A3 HD DVD player which only upconverts DVD's to 1080i but the PQ of the same DVD looks a lot better with that than my blu ray player. I think it has to do with the chipset that the HD DVD Player has.
