What's the big deal there? Last season for sure is not his best season. Did you watch Zach when he's in Portland before his knee surgery?
It still looks possible if they can agree on details. Knicks, Clippers in talks over Randolph 11:02 PM EDT, July 11, 2008 LAS VEGAS - Stephon Marbury's future remains unresolved, but the Knicks are on the verge of moving another big contract -- Zach Randolph's. A person close to the situation confirmed Friday that the Los Angeles Clippers have approached the Knicks about acquiring Randolph in an effort to make up for the sudden loss of Elton Brand to free agency. The story was first reported Friday by SI.com, which said Knicks president Donnie Walsh turned down the Clippers' offer. It was not known which players would be going to the Knicks in the deal, but it would not have to be a salary match because the Clippers are well under the cap. Randolph has three years and $48 million left on his contract. The Knicks, with an eye on being in the same position by 2010, would not accept contracts that go beyond that year in return for Randolph, who averaged 17.6 points and 10.3 rebounds last season. He was acquired from Portland by Isiah Thomas on draft night in 2007 for Steve Francis and Channing Frye. It is believed that Walsh was hoping to pry Eric Gordon, the seventh overall pick in the NBA draft, as part of the deal. That move seems unlikely, but it is expected that Walsh will talk again with the Clippers, who also are participating in the NBA Summer League here. The source said Walsh has been "very active" in trade discussions and is "looking at these types of transactions constantly." Marbury also is brought up in trade discussions, but most teams interested in the 31-year-old point guard would rather wait for the Knicks to buy him out of the final year and $21.9 million left on his contract, then tender him a veteran's minimum contract. Marbury came out Friday night for the Knicks' summer league team's first practice and spoke about the uncertainty of his future with an understanding tone. "I've expressed everything I could possibly say: I love New York, I want to play basketball here, but I understand it's a business, and in this business, things happen," he said. "I don't take it personally. I'll just continue to do what I do." But as far as he knows: "Right now, I've been told that I'm going to be playing basketball here." Coach Mike D'Antoni would go only as far as to say Marbury "is on the team" and that the signing of Chris Duhon is not related to Marbury's status.
Guys, Guys, Guys. This isn't Dumb and Dumber. This is the cat and the canary here. There is only one possible candidate for being a worse GM than Isaiah. And that is dear ole Elgin. Walsh knows it and he's the cat just toying with the canary before he sinks his teeth right through him. Walsh will probably squeeze out a first round non-protected lottery pick or something like that and then lay Zach off on Elgin and we'll watch the Clippers totally discombobulate for the next 3 years, while Walsh will take their lottery pick and a superstar free agent and build a perennial contender. Poor dumb Elgin. Poor Clippers.
Clipper fans are like those people who wait for their houses to get flooded out like hurricanes. Hurricane Elgin....
Except you play with the carary too long and it may come to its senses and get away. There is a chance Clippers (and it's really Dunleavy, not Elgin, in charge now, I think) goes on to take away somone else's bad contract and no longer want Zbo.
If the Knicks are playing a waiting game in hope of landing a premiere free agent like LeBron in 2010/11. They'll definately need more than just cap space. Randolph's expiring contract could snare them another big name. That big name could also help to lure LeBron to NY.
That reputation, starting with kowtowing to Isiah over the Freddie Jones pick and falling deeper and deeper out of the game due to an odd infatuation over Al Harrington over the summers of 2003 and 2006 (I know Bird was technically in charge for 2006, but come on ...), isn't as deserved as we thought it was back in, say, 1999 or 2000. And what happened in 1999 and 2000? The guy gets a fifth pick for Jonathan Bender for Antonio Davis, what we think is a great move, but that blows up because of Bender's tiny frame. Bender was a solid prospect going to Miss. State until he dropped 31 in the McDonald's All-American, and that one game performance had all sorts of "next KG" hype building up for no reason. 2000? Isiah over Rick Carlisle. The NBC studio guy who couldn't hack it on the color analysis over the guy who essentially coached your team from 1997 to 2000.
randolph's expiring contract comes one year after the summer of 2010. that's why they want to move him for contract which have only 2 years left or less.
Took the words right out of my mouth. If Donnie Walsh is so great, then how are the Pacers where they are now?
Yeah, Isaiah got over on him. And the whole Bird/Isaiah combo was a mess. So, he has a penchant for listening to hall of famers. He's still a very good GM and I believe he will turn around the Knicks. And I believe he will get the better end of trading Zach. I think he would have got it just getting Zach out of there. But I think he's holding out for a little bit extra. Any team that trades for Zach Randolph has to have the worst GM in the NBA. So whether it is Elgin or Dunleavy, for them to seek out Randolph is a total joke.
It started with Ron Ron's nuclear explosion in Detroit. The franchise was set back and never recovered from that. Plus, JO's injury problems dug them deeper. I think Walsh is a good GM and the Knicks will be very glad they hired him.
It started when he refused to trade Al Harrington's contract for Terrell Brandon in 2003, forcing him to deal Brad Miller for pennies on the dollar. The Pacers were one of a few East favorites in 2004-05, but they were favorites in a Conference that was worse than the one we're seeing right now. Even with a sane Artest and healthy team, this was going to be the fifth or sixth best team in the NBA that year.
"randolph can hit a layup, a free throw, a college three AND and nba three...if we needed him to...to win the championship."
LOL! The Clippers low balled the Knicks with a 2nd round pick for Zach. The Clippers still hasnt learn from the departure of Elton Brand.
