Actually, we don't get any gas from the UAE. In fact, their decline in oil is what led to the Prince dumping so much money into making Dubai the next New York.
Dubai is nice as a plan b for when all the oil is gone and the country needs revenue from tourism, but still too many fanatical Muslims who really run the place and as a Muslim myself that is definitely not a good thing for long term growth, the fundamentalists ruin everything everywhere they go, sadly our religion is pretty stone age in philosophy ie women not driving in saudi
It's culture not religion that hinders women over there. Ya it's sad, but the people at the top making and upholding bs laws got to go.
Pretty sure they abandoned that world island project. Who knows how many others will be delayed, I am pretty sure they had to be bailed out recently because the prince overspent on all these projects. Regardless, it's pretty f'in cool to build all this in the desert.
I hope they can parlay that architectural talent into some large scale infrastructure and manufacturing long-term. Even without a drop of oil, the Middle East should be every bit as or even more advanced than the Asian Tigers.

It is pretty amazing. I don't know the current situation or facts there, but the fact that half of those pics look a bit like the earthquest pics, and finish with a spaceport, does make me question the fulfillment and longevity of this plan. Very ambitious.
