The censorship in Dubai is rather stupid. But I have to ask you, why are you in your freakin room in DUBAI? My favorite city in the world. So many things to do there. Go out and have fun man! Been to? Mercato Mall (some of the finest chicks in the world) City Center Mall Jumeirah Beach The Jebel Ali area?
The censorship is just a front..... you can get whatever you want whenever you want..just need to know where to go...the censorship is just for repect of the culture and religon.....no biggie. jokes...Sir Jackie Chiles ...like Rocket03 said you need to get out of your room....there are enough things to do there..except for Mercato Mall...
I just arrived last night...was too tired to go out. So how long is this Mercato Mall open and how far is it from the Grand Hyatt? Any other recommendations? Any advice is appreciated! Thanks. BTW, looks like the BBS was down...I was already getting paranoid and thinking they had read my posts and decided to block it .
SJC -- sorry for hijacking your thread. To make up for it, here's a great Maddox link that deals with censorship: Websense blocks Maddox
On a semi-related note. Went to a mosque Friday for 2pm prayers. Very nice people. Very welcoming and warm.
Man, it's wild to hear you guys talking about Dubai- I grew up there when I was a kid, from 3rd to 8th grade. I understand things have changed a LOT since I was there in the 80's. I can't wait to go back someday.
And by the way- not to defend censorship, but we have magazines and such that are deemed unsuitable for children to see and have laws in place to prevent that from happening. It's the same thing there- but the views of what is too sexually provocative is very, very conservative. I remember watching a show on TV (english programming was very limited back then) and there was a cut just when this woman was taking off her coat, revealing her shoulders.
I dont know if you are still in Dubai. Definitely go check out the following: The bar on the top floor of Emirates Towers on Sheik Zayed Road. Expensive stuff, but the view is breathtaking. And I am not just talking about the high dollar hookers. Mercato Mall on Jumeirah Road, by Dubai Zoo. City Center Mall in Diera. Burj Al Arab. Go to the restaurant/bar on top. Go during sunset and it is once again breathtaking. Definitely check out the beaches by Mina Seyahi and other resorts on Jumeirah. Simly awesome!! You are probably not there to buy a house, but go the Palm Islands sales office and pretend you are there to buy a house. The stuff they have is out of this world. Go to some of the clubs on Jumierah side on Thurs or Fri. The Lebanese chicks you will see will blow your mind. There are more, but thats all I can think of right now.
Not really the same thing. You buy magazines and 40% of the ink used in the pictures are Black Sharpies covering the arms and legs of ladies. It makes them all look like they are wearing black jump suits or something. Kind of like Scuba diving suits. Looks rediculous.
Hello Rockets03, many thanks for your kind advice. I did not make it to Mercato Mall, but I did go to City Center Mall. I also went up to the "rotating restaurant" at the top of the Hyatt Regency hotel. I did not go up to the Burj el Arab restaurant, because I kind of thought it would be unbelievably expensive, but I went to the Jumeirah hotel and looked at the Burj el Arab from there. Dubai is an interesting place to visit, but it really is a different world (except for the mall, that could have been anywhere in the world). Actually, I think there are a lot more Indians here than Arabs. You mentioned the hookers. For some reason, I think there is a LOT of them here, I saw a lot of old guys, also at the pool, with young Eastern European (I think Russian or Ukrainian) girls. Kind of strange that prostitution seems to be running wild here, and at the same time you cannot eat during the day. Not really making a judgment, just saying that it is a place with a lot of contrasting impressions. I'm leaving tonight (at 3:50 a.m. (ugh) to Istanbul on a Singapore Airlines flight...), and will fly back to Germany from there. Thanks again.
