You deal drugs in China and get caught, you die (bribes are a different issue).

The Chinese were set in their ways because they had been at the top of advancements for a long period of time. The bricks used in making the Great Wall of China are as durable as the concrete used in making buildings today. They figured that stuff out more than 3 thousand years ago. The History Channel doesn't lie! :p

That's debateable to what the West depicts. The history courses I took pointed out the contrary... that the Chinese elite were too content with their own state and achievements to pay attention to the "uncultered barbarians" while the Europeans were eagerly eyeing trade routes to China.

Though there are some who feel the non-Han ethnic groups in China are considered second class citizens, it's not unlike the Native Americans in the United States, the Basques in Spain or the Kurds in Turkey. They're stuck in the position of integrating to the predominant culture or being left behind to their own "backward ways". Governments want to support their cultural constuents not some fringe group that could possibly secede from the country.

Confucian values doesn't neccesarily promote change. But the other predominant religion in the area, Buddhism, came from India. As an entire country, they have preserved and grown a unified culture instead of being torn apart like the Balkans. The ruling structure, on the other hand, makes it impossible for real change. They enforce neo-Confucian values to ensure mass obedience. But to their credit, they're maintaining order in a diverse populace several times larger and denser (per square mile that's habitable) than the United States.

My brother in law used to tell me that chicks in the US don't wear bras, often go topless in public and are very unselective towards sex...I find out it wasn't entirely true after I gets here and live for a while :)

All that is true of chicks. If you were going to grow up and become a fryer, wouldn't you live for the "now?"
