Why would Martin Shkreli hike an old drug price by 5000%? Only a 'moron' would ask http://www.fiercebiotech.com/story/...ug-price-5000-only-moron-would-ask/2015-09-20 I wanted to see what the D&D's thoughts were on this. I think this guy is a complete POS.
MDs, pharmacologists and double-blind research ain't cheap. Unfortunately, neither are patent lawyers or marketing directors.
This is where healthcare should be regulated by the government, because private companies are interested in making money, not helping citizens.
What an *******. He says the extra money will go toward research to make a better version of the drug (That's already working) and not his pockets, bull ****.
Drive up to Canada and buy it cheaper than the original price. http://www.pharmacychecker.com/brand/price-comparison/daraprim/25+mg/
This is ridiculous! pyrimethamine for 750$? ridiculous! And what about pets. You can't be serious if every dog will have to cost 750$ for a therapy! I know that human lives are ofcourse non comparable but this is a extremely often used drug in vet medicine. The good thing is that there are many alternative drugs.
Why would "new research" be needed when the old pill was working just fine? This isn't the Invisible Hand, it's the Invisible Brass Knuckles.
So, if the drug is 62 years old and off-patent, what's stopping another company from making them at a lower price than the new price that this company charges? Is the formula a secret? Does it take a long time to set up the manufacturing facility?
They just speculated on MSNBC that it might happen. The problem is because it hasn't happened yet he has no competition and sadly the ass hat can make the price whatever the hell he wants.
It's similar to an orphan drug, where the condition is rare or uncommon and there's not enough patients to sustain a good profit margin for a competing drug or new patent.
