IMO, it seems people are going about the wrong way when it comes to comparing OD with other tight ends, or tight ends on our team. Because we're talking about the FA market here. Sure, OD may be one of the best TE in the game right now, but is he worth, say, Winslow money? The Texans have some major position of needs. And I really feel like we should try to splurge on a lineman, secondary, or even maybe a RB rather than Daniels.
I guess my ass should have knocked on wood. At least we get to see this little experiment through to the end. Casey caught a couple passes yesterday, but he sort of tripped over his own feet on both receptions after he caught it. Hopefully that was his brain trying to do more than his body could keep up with and he settles down. The guy certainly has the hands to be OD's equal...but his vision and route running may be lacking.
I agree with everything you said (even that you should have knocked on wood ). I think that Casey's hands are good, but I would like to see his performance after the catch improve. Like you, I said in another thread that he fell over right after a couple of catches. Hopefully just nerves. The other thing is that all of his catches were short yardage, and mostly to the flats. That means that they have yet to run any plays where he's the primary option (he probably needs to work with first offense, first). I'd like to see how he does getting down the field on passing plays. Supposedly, Casey is more of a Dallas Clark-type than Owen Daniels. If so, I want to see a jumbo backfield with him in it on goal line situations. I want to see him blocking more, and I want to see a nice jumbo goal-line look.
