Since this is D&D: You know what sucks about San Francisco? The only stereotype that holds true is the bums. There's no hippies, fewer in-your-face gays than Houston, and only a couple of pirates.
I've done it! But I took a sort of roundabout route: Houston to Big Bend National Park Big Bend to El Paso El Paso up to Mesa Verde Mesa Verde to Monument Valley Monument Valley to the Grand Canyon Grand Canyon to Zion National Park Zion to Las Vegas Las Vegas to Los Angeles Los Angeles to San Francisco And there you have it! You may get there in a month or so.
Surely you can order these online? I order by kitchen exahust from a chinese company in LA. I am sure if you seach online you can find these in online stores.
I do not have it. I just saw it recommended and it kind of looked like the one you want. You would think they would let you order that one from them. You are far from the only one looking at getting that cleaver.

Don't forget to wear flowers in your hair. I've done the drive twice and it depends if you want to do the scenic or just get there fast. Generally I've taken the fast route, which is I-10 to I-5 but make sure you bypass the LA basin. If you are coming in on I-10 switch at San Bernadino and head north to Bakersfield and then cut back to I-5. Take I-5 to I-580 to the I-80 cross the Bay Bridge and you're there. One other thing about the trip is that it takes longer to get from Houston to El Paso than it does from El Pass to CA.. Also depending on when you are going watch out for duststorms in the Central Valley of CA or mudslides in some of the mountain passes.
I see that's the Berkeley Public Library and not the CAL Libraries. CAL as a state institution that does Federal research frequently flaunts the City of Berkeley's ordinances such as nuclear free and no styrofoam. Heck when I was there they had a working nuclear reactor with the building it was in fronting a city street. From what I recall of the Berkeley Public Library though it wasn't that great anyway.
