Look through this thread to find a hotel deal.
    http://www.fatwallet.com/t/63/704925/

try to stay in the middle of the strip, MGM is pretty good. this site has good descriptions of the hotels.
    cheapovegas.com

Try to get in by friday night. go to Tryst (Wynn) on Friday night and Pure (Ceasers) on sat night. If cant go out fri, go to Tryst on sat.

On sunday night, BodyEnglish is the place to go (Hard Rock).

Make sure u get the free cover passes from the guys in the streets, u shouldnt have to pay more then a dollar or two for these, they might not work, but if they do, u save the $30 cover, its worth the risk. Also, do not waste your time by waiting in line, they basically wont let you in. U'll have to pay about $20-30/person to get to the front of the line.

Do not waste your fri/sat/sun nights..... these clubs (chicks) are out of this world!!! You'll thank me.

Depends on how often you'd stop. It would probably take me 26 hours, but then I travel with nothing but women in my car. Potty breaks eat up time.

    Personally, I'd fly.

i would avoid this route if you are bringing any "herbal treats" with you. a few miles east of el paso is a border patrol checkpoint w/ drug dogs. they can be real hard-asses there. plus i once spent a day in sonora in sutton county jail, so i always get nervous taking that route.

i think 24 hours is about right if you take the i-40 route - it will add 4 or 5 hours compared to i-10, but its more more scenic and less cops. dallas - amarillo - albequerque - flagstaff and grand canyon - vegas. yall could camp around albequerque or santa fe - lots of cool camping areas and national forests. theres hot springs around there too if you want to get naked w/ a bunch of old hippies.

chaco canyon in n.w. new mexico is pretty amazing - old anasazi city - very creepy place - we were the only ones out there when we went, but you can literally feel the presence of others there (spoooooky). its about a 20 mile dirt road to get there, so unless you have a truck or an suv forget about it.

canyon de chelly in n.e. arizona is cool. and yall should do a driveby of the grand canyon if you have never been. even if you are only there for an hour or so its still worth it.

they had the best buffet when i was there 10 years ago.

is circus circus still open? if so, bust out your nicest, tackiest polyester suit and let the good times roll. we were there during the week and it was like $35 a night.

i thought the nicest hotels to stay at would be mgm grand or the luxor.

excalibur or whatever the medieval themed one is was cheesy, but i liked.

Well having been a veteran of many exciting 10 hour + bus trips in northern india - I'll take boring over exciting more often than not.

its 4 of them and they are staying sun-tues, so they can get really cheap deals on the 4 star hotels. $99 for palms, mgm etc is a steal.

but yeah, you can't put a description on the cheapo place experience. i enjoyed the Stardust when i was poor . (Stardust = Hotel in movie Swingers)

I'm planning to visit Vegas in August as well. Me and my girl friend wants to stay for 3 nights, and plan to use the last day to go to Grand Canyon. Is it best to rent a car and go ourselves, or is it better to go with one of those tour groups? And does anyone know a website where you can find good deal on shows in Vegas?

    Thanks.

So...I was looking at Enterprise car rentals
They say that mileage is unlimited in TX, LA, and OK and after that they charge $0.20 per mile after 150 miles. How the hell would they know where you drove the car? Do they have tracking systems in them???

i've never stayed there. i think the worst place was either the Palace station or howard johnsons. the electricity went out for like an hour for the whole casino, its like 125 degrees. plus they have a burger king there.
also the howard johnsons in the middle of the strip signifies you are poor or a dirt cheap mfker.

why don you guys just drive your cars? make sure you get some oil changes on the way and you should be good.

A couple summers ago we almost went because three nights/round-trip airfare from Houston was $249. That included free drinks at the bar regardless of whether you were gambling or not and one free meal a day. I still can't believe we didn't do that.

I dunno. Don't really want to to take my own car. Its brand new and may not be ready for such a long drive
But anyways, I got coupons for Avis and National that make the final price same as Enterprise and with unlimited mileage.

The question I have now that nobody seems to know the answer to is about insurance. I have credit cards that offer up to $100,000 car rental insurance. Credit card customer service does not know exactly how it works - they just say to decline all coverage from the car rental place and use the credit card. Has anyone ever relied on the insurance offered through the credit card? Do you decline everything from the rental place?

you can buy insurance from the rental place. dude, just drive your car.a friend of mine took his Civic to Vegas from Austin and to Miami from Austin. its highway miles, just be sure to drop by a jiffy lube etc a couple times on the trip.
    you are insured right?
