The only designated drivers I know are pregnant women. My good friend is pregnant and we can all go out for dinner with drinks and not worry about the driving. It's great!

I'm guilty of driving buzzed on more than one occasion. Times where I had my facilities to drive, know I'm not swerving and stay on the speed limit. That doesn't make it right. I've always been lucky enough that there hasn't been anything to distract me. If there had been, things could've been a lot different.

Things changed for me last Sunday. I spent all day drinking beer at K.C.'s while watching football. Thinking it was my typical Sunday, I got behind the wheel to drive home. Next thing I know, I'm passed out on my couch when I'm supposed to be spending a nice evening with my wife, with whom-as you all know-things aren't going so great right now. So, I basically could've killed someone, been put in jail, and I ended up disappointing and pissing off my wife at the worst possible time.

That's why I'm not drinking for the foreseeable future. It's not even tough decision. I'm looking forward to going to BW3 tonight to catch some games and drink Coke or water. And if the day comes and alcohol enters my life again (I'm not an alcoholic by any stretch), a designated driver or a cab will always be the route I go.

It's just not worth it on so many levels.

IT's not the cops fault that someone was driving drunk. If people want to stop the "money-grab" then not driving drunk would be a good start, and I don't think the cops would be too sad about that.

Spending the night in jail sucks. Spending thousands of dollars in assorted fines and fees also sucks. Cops more tuned into overtime and ticket quotas than getting citizens home safely also suck. Overall, the whole scenario sucks.

Obviously, it's not enough if people like the OP are still considering driving "buzzed."

How hard is it for people to see this? Your reaction time is reduced greatly after even one drink. It's not even a question.

If you drive after drinking, you're not endangering just yourself, you endanger EVERYONE on the road. Selfishness like that SHOULD be punished and should be discouraged by any means necessary.

Studies show that cell phone use is more dangerous. Where is the outrage?

Driving in Houston is challenging enough while sober...we need these DWI laws in place.

Are you saying that a sober driver using his/her cellphone poses more danger to public safety than a drunk guy/girl driving while intoxicated? If so, do you have a link to a reliable study that would back up your statement?

BTW, there is a reason why some states ban cell phone use while driving altogether, or at least require you to use a hands-free device. I foresee those laws affecting Texas residents in the not-so-distant future.

My guess is that the fallacy of the cell phone vs. DUI argument is that for the most part, cell phone usage is constant while DUI can escalate based on how many drinks you've had. Perhaps cell phone use is equivalent to DUI with a .08, but I suspect that there is less of a comparison with a DUI of .14 (for example).

I would find it very hard to believe no one ever not driving buzzed at least once, unless you just don't drink...And even then, it was probably because of some wrong decision...

I'm not condoning DUI, or anything, but to stick to the subject, laws are in place for a reason...Have they, IMHO, gone too far, yes...However, calling a cab is easy, but unfortunatley, being buzzed does screw up your decision making process...

Well, being deprived of sleep also deprives you of mental abilities...so you shouldn't be driving at 2 AM regardless of whether you've had a drink or not...

Ya know, have the state run free transportation or, at the very least, have THE FU##ING busses run past twelve and y'all may have a point.

Until then, realize it is a money-grab.

This is really hilarious. Fatty the free market warrior wants tax payers to subsidize his drunkeness.

Just a question: How much have DWI laws cut down on the drunken accidents? I've driven sober a ton at 2 in the morning and it seems like everyone else on the road is probaly drunk anyway.

Thanks, but I'd rather shoot myself before hanging out with your crowd.

"Like, oh my god, you expect me to go out and not get liquored up...seriously, that just won't be happening, you must be crazy..."

wait, I forgot one of these to make the point strong -

I don't get enough sleep. I think it's way more dangerous for me to drive while being sleepy than drive while being drunk. (even though I don't drive when i have a drink or 17.)

i txt message a lot when i drive. I'm pretty good at it.

I also eat alot when i drive. I can eat almost anything, except soup, unless it has a lid, but that's too easy.
