Drexler is my all time favorite player and the reason why I'm a Rockets fan. With that said I'm fairly certain the OP is deaf.
If youve been watching every game for the years that many of you claim to have done(and probably actually have), youd be used to the fact that he's not the greatest commentator ever, but the guy has more knowledge of what superstars are thinking about trades and aquisitions and how to handle a poor defender, and deciding to attack the rim over laying it in than anyone else still alive in rockets history(besides #34)... He's gotten better over the years.. I've only missed a handful of game in the last 5 or 6 years(when my DVR messes up) and I can honestly say that he has gotten much better and is NOT THAT BAD to listen to.. Complain about our players, not the commentator..
Personally, I love to make fun of Drexler, but have to say that he's not that bad among homer TV guys. Drexler really doesn't annoy me much, he mostly just make me chuckle at some of the silly stuff he says. Some of the homer TV guys tend to spend all game crying about how unfairly refs are treating their guys.
I think we should: a) bring back Calvin b) make Clyde the sideline reporter just to see him make off-the-wall statements to players and coaches, and plus this way we can savor the drexerlisms more c) Make Matt Bullard live in the ghetto during the NBA season because dude is as white as someone can be..he needs some more soul to him.
I don't have to like the guy just because he was a former Rocket. I respect his career as a basketball player. I am thankful for his playing ability, and his contribution to bringing Houston a championship. I don't know him personally so i cannot speak to his character. But I have listened to him commentate for years. He's terrible. Not only is he ill-suited for sports broadcasting, I get the impression that he doesn't take it seriously. He certainly doesn't appear to have worked on his craft. Where as Bill appears to be a real professional, Clyde seems to think all he has to do is show up and talk about basketball, and he'll be great. He's the only person who thinks his off-color comments are funny. The guy is, seriously, the worst sports commentator I've ever listened to. And frankly, I should be able to voice my displeasure with the broadcast product the team is putting out, without being accused of hating on my team, or being disloyal. To the thread originator ...I say, your stunning rebuke of all who can't stand Drexler's commentating is not appropriate. You are in the small, small minority. Do you dig through Drexler's trash too? Are you stalking him? Do you write him letters? How far does the man-crush go?
I think most of the Clyde haters are going to complain profusely no matter who is seated next to BW. I am entertained by Clyde and look forward to his comments and silly jokes. I wouldn't care if all he said was "I like boobies." I especially like when BW makes a captain obvious comment and Clyde rips him a new one and embarrasses him a bit. Granted it does not happen often and is normally the other way around - but....you gotta love it I like boobies.
Clyde was a great basketball player, loved his game. Great person. Color analysis is just not his thing. President? Why not? Probably just as good as what we have or could get. Obama's speaking ability is off the charts, his performance for whatever reason (poor staff choices, etc.) has frankly been subpar. But the Republican field is uninspiring. If Clyde has ideas for stimulating the economy, I say give him a chance.
Amen. For the casual basketball fan, Clyde is the perfect commentator for the Houston Rockets. For people that are on clutchfans ALL day long, you are the minority of Rockets fans. So alot of the things he says you might think DUH!, but it is the first time some fans are hearing it. Clyde also has much less subjective opinions when Bill has a clear emotional bias for certain players (mostly the white guys). Bill will sometimes makes comments that are a little extreme. Clyde GLIDES through the commentary and subtly disagrees with Bill, bringing us back to earth on whatever the subject is. I love the dynamic between the two. It is much more enjoyable than a bunch of Xs and Os.
What cracks me up are those that complain that Clyde states the obvious, and then clamor for the return of The Murph Man. I love Calvin, but a few years of "If we can play good offense and play good defense we'll be in the game" would remind you folks who the *real* captain obvious was. Always greener.
I heard his sobering last week talking out how Stern was the best commish in any sport. Huh? Morey should ***** slap him and I would renew my season tickets for 5 years.
I could see him blaming high unemployment, the spiraling out of control government debt and the coming recession on a draft in the building (instead of Bush). Which would be an improvement, you must admit.
