I'm so glad this didn't pass. And I'm sure that everyone who is against this bill would agree with me when I say that I would leave the country tomorrow if I learned that my parents had come here illegally when I was an infant and that I'm not actually a citizen of this country. I don't care at all that it's the only home I've ever known, that I've gone through college, and that I'm contributing to society.

    Cool. Me too.

The immigrant sentiments in this country really confuse me. If we're anti-immigrant, let's just make everybody leave, even those whose ancestors used a land bridge to get here.

I can see this law being unfair to other people who graduated college via student visa or wanting to join the military but can't due to the fact that they are a citizen of another country.

These people have to leave the country after they are done with school due to the fact that they can't get a green card. I think it is their DREAM to stay here and work. So why should we reward a group of people whose parent disregarded the laws and give them a path way to citizenship but not the people whose want to do it the right way?

I'm all for giving them a path to citizenship also. The more smart people the better. We don't have enough of them.

    I'm a conservative who's very pro-immigration. I'm practically an open borders guy.

Sadly it doesn't confuse me. This is driven primarily by economic uncertainty and xenophobia. Almost all of the rhetoric I have seen comes down to that immigrants, illegal and legal, are here to steal our jobs or leach off of our system. The DREAM Act though is about people who want to contribute to this country and are also willing to lay their lives down for this country.

And there is no reason why being conservative and pro-immigration should be mutually exclusive. I would say the idea of free trade should also include the movement of labor across borders and anti-immigration laws are essentially a type of protectionism.

The ones that the DREAM Act would address were when they came here.

My understanding is that a foreign national can join the US military. They may have to renounce their previous citizenship though and I am not sure how that works if they aren't granted residency following their military service.

We generally don't punish children for the crimes of their parents. I mean if my parents stole to provide for me as a baby should I also do time as an adult since I benefited from that crime?

So what? Now we're going to incentivize illegal immigration because even if your child is illegal, as long as you can get away with breaking the law long enough then we'll make them citizens? That will surely dissuade foreign nationals from continuing to stream across the border undocumented. This is brilliant. Who wrote this POS legislation, the Mexican Ambassador?

It's not a punishment to require someone to have legal standing. Parents who go to prison lose their children to CPS all the time. Is that a punishment? Of course not.

i think we would doing more harm than good to the world if we do pass The Dream act. There are many people who came here to do their master degree and we are telling them they can't stay here due to the fact that they came here in their 20s legally vs other people whose parents brought them here illegally while they were a baby.

These highly educated people would go back to their country and learn a very important lessons, following the rules are for chumps and if you get away with something long enough it will be all right in the end, they would start doing short cut and do what ever it take to get what they want because following the rules would get them no where.

I do think that the children of the illegal has to bear some responsible for actions of their parents. If that is the case, maybe parents wont be so quick to break the laws if they realize their actions will have impacts on their children. There are many people in other countries that won't break the laws due to the fact that it will reflect poorly on their family and it will bring disgrace to many generations after them.

That's cute how big and tough you talk on the internet when the situation doesn't even apply to you. I'd be willing to bet that if your parents and yourself were in fact illegal, you'd be singing a different tune.

If they stole something and gave it to you, it doesn't mean whatever they gave you is actually yours. It means you are in possession of stolen goods.
