Transcript of their discussion: Goran: Look Morey, Dynex is releasing a new model - my whole family wants one. Contract is going to have to start at 10M. Morey: You realize Lowry is getting paid half that? Goran: I know but I was like T-mac back home in Slovenia. And they call Zoran the next Lebron. I'm expecting you sign my brother too. Morey: You can't be serious ... the next Lebron? Goran: Yes, sometimes they chant "Zobron! Zobron! King Zobron, we are all witness." The movie, "You Don't Mess with the Zoran" you've seen it yes? It was based on my brother. Anyways I want Dynex, I want starting 10M. Morey: Ok, over 5 years. Goran: Done.
^ this, his agent knows there's high interest in him (especially from the rockets) so they are going to try and transform that into its maximum value.. I'd be surprised if they actually expect 10m though
By the way, there is a lot of lack of reading comprehension going on in this thread. Ken Berger's tweet says Dragic is "looking for a deal that starts in the $10M range." People talk as if they think he's gone unless he gets a starting salary of at least $10M. The tweet simply says he's "looking for" such a deal, and the starting salary is "in the $10M range." They may not find what they are "looking for" in the market and "range" can easily go down $1 M or $2 M. If Morey is going to underbid when he can, why shouldn't Goran's agent ask for a little more than perhaps they think the Rockets are willing to offer? The $10 M is probably more of a realistic ceiling (unless somebody really surprises us, in that case why shouldn't Goran take the extra money?) than an absolute floor.
What he wants probably won't equal what he gets. He's just throwing it out there on the chance that some team actually bites. But I doubt he's seriously expecting 10mil a yr
Bye goran! Bring in zoran  I honestly still think lowry is just as good. If he can work it out with kmac, I really wouldn't mind lowry being our pg. As of now though,I think we need goran back.
The thing is, isn't he an unrestricted FA? If a team offers him $10M, it's on Morey on whether he'll offer the same and leave it up to Goran to choose, or, offer more. As fans, do we want him back at 10M per?
By the way, if you want to see what a player that's really prepared to leave a team in a huff over contract $ looks like, check out this thread: http://bbs.clutchfans.com/showthread.php?t=222066 So glad some of you people are not the Rocket GM. If you were, whenever a player's agent makes an opening bid that's for $1 M or $2 M a year more than you think is reasonable, you'd tell him go **** himself instead of actually entering negotiations and possibly reach a reasonable contract. You'd also tell every trade partner to go **** themselves when you receive a trade offer that you deem to be "lowball." Patience, people. Remember how the Rockets signed Dalembert to the 2 year $13.7 million contract (with $8.5 mil guranteed)? You think Dalembert's agent said he was "looking for a 2 year deal in the $13.7 million range with $8.5 mil guaranteed" when he reached out to interested teams?
Lets see if another team offers $10M first. For example, if nobody offers more than $7.5M, it might be a clue that a $10M contract would have negative value in the trade market should the team need to trade him. If several teams are offering him $10M (or more), then it may well be a reasonable contract that won't handicap you badly. Dragic can do whatever he wants. He can take even take $6 M offer from Toronto when the Rockets offer him $10 M. But that would be stupid. Chances it'll take a few days for the picture to clear up as to what each bidder's "best offer" is and it'll be up to Dragic to choose where he wants to go based on his own financial and non-financial reasons.
Find and dandy, until a team comes in and gives Goran what he wants. And then it's on Morey to decide whether he's worth it, or pray that Goran takes less somehow to stay with Houston
he's been the better player, he just became replaceable after he demanded a trade. but Goran asking for 10 million is really disrespectful
Actually, that would be the stupid thing to do. First, I doubt his real market value is below $8 million/year, so $10 M starting salary is a high opening bid, but not ridiculous. People who expect Dragic to have only MLE offers because that's what Kyle Lowry makes and Dragic is at a level similar to Lowry are delusional. Kyle Lowry's MLE contract is considered a very good commodity because he is WAY UNDERPAID at that amount. Second, if another team offer him $10M starting salary and you think it's too much, you try to find ways to convince him to stay at a price that you want. Maybe convince him he's a better on-court fit here compared to elsewhere, established relations with coaching staff/teammates vs. unfamiliar faces, maybe offer him a player option at the end of contract so that he can opt out and earn more should his level of play warrants it. It may or may not work but you don't just give up.
