Recently, I've heard some criticism on this board concerning taking QBs in the early rounds. The feeling seems to be that the position is too much of a gamble. I was sort of on the fence on the issue, leaning towards believing that getting a franchise QB is a gamble worth taking, but this convinced me that they're definitely worth it. http://www.collegefootballnews.com/Top_5_Thoughts/Top 5 Thoughts.htm Thought about putting this thread in the astros/texans forum, but did not... since it's not really about David Carr.
TheFreak: How many QB's are actually starting in the NFL who weren't drafted? Kurt Warner and Garcia, I believe... but who else? Not saying they don't exist, just that I don't know if they do... seems like a bit too similar to playing the lottery for me. Do you just not value the qb position, in general?
One interesting thing I heard is that 70% or more (or something like that) of starting QBs in the NFL last year weren't with the team they were originally drafted by... Also, look at the last 2 Super Bowl winning QBs. They both were in offenses that were among the most conservative, scaled-down offenses in the NFL. In this salary cap era, a QB might be the least important position on offense, after FB. Defense and special teams wins in the NFL. The main offensive objective is to not turn the ball over and give up field position.
I'm saying don't draft one, pick one up some other way. It's easy to find a serviceable veteran quarterback nowadays.
