any player can say they're working on their 3pt shot. didn't yao say he worked on his 3pt shot last summer?
Nice scouting report. Sounds like he can be a two position type of player, lot of threads about us needing a big SF who is a scorer, this would be a way for the Rox to get bigger at the SG position and front court by moving him to SF and TMac back to SG. Getting drafted in the second round and signing a one year deal was a blessing in disguise for the young man. If he was drafted as a low first round he would have a 4 yr deal making 1M plus, now he gets to go on the open market and have the opportunity to make MLE money for 5 years. I hope we don't have a team out there that is willing to pay full MLE money for him because he won't be a Rocket next year if there is.
We're probably going to have to sign him for about half the MLE or slightly less. Whatever the contract is, keep Landry in Houston! Wonder why Morey targetted him so much yet signed him so late to such a small contract, and only for 1 season??!!
We would really difficult to beat if we got a big man to play next to Yao. Now that would be something.
i rather he polish up his mid-range game. Its nothing great currently. Its above average and thats about it.
I really do hope we keep him. I honestly hope we just trade hayes! If he is working on that three i definitely see him as an horry type of player. The kid has heart and Balls. Keep him!
It's the best way to check out that torn ACL, then cut him loose if he's not worth it. If he shows promise, re-sign him long term. But Carl sabotaged that plan a little bit by playing so damn well. Now other teams are interested and he's going to be a little more expensive.
Great article and from the contents of the article, he is not happy and was affected by the issue of his contract. I am surprised about the way Houston Rockets handle his contract.
The reason why Morey didn't jump to sign Landry after scouting him so thoroughly was because of the Mike James and Luis Scola trades that occurred between the scouting/selection and the signing periods. In those two trades, the Rockets were forced to take back Justin Reed and Jackie Butler, respectively, as small, albotross-like contract "throw-ins". In fact, Les Alexander has to pay BOTH of those guys next year. It was this unpleasant thought of having to pay players NOT to play for the Rockets that gave pause to signing Landry, a second round pick with no guaranteed contract on a team that, at the time, had about 20 players under contract. Let's just hope that the Rockets can re-sign Landry for a reasonable salary and that negotiation will not come back to bite Les and Daryl.
No Les and Morey should just suck it up for their mistake last year and sign the man. If they gotta go over the lux tax then so be it. You wanna be a contender or not?
I agree. I'm not saying he isn't a good player, I just hope they don't knee jerk a contract. Is he booze or malick rose or in between like kenny thomas? That's the nillion dollar question.
People need to get over this concept of Landry becoming a 3pt shooter. It's absurd. Anybody that watched him play last season can tell that while he has a decent (yes, decent) mid range game, he will never be hanging out on the perimeter launching 3s no matter how much time he spends trying to improve in that area. The strength of his game is playing in the paint and that won't change much during his NBA career. If anything, it could serve him well to improve his mid range shooting. There are plenty of bigs in the league that can shoot 3s, no denying that. The fact is though that Landry will never be one of them.
ohhh sacrilege!! Landry cannot play with his back to the basket. If he turns and tries to dunk on Tim Duncan or Al Horford he's going to get blocked. He has to catch the ball on the move and face his man with a dribble drive to get past him. It would really help his game a lot to have the 3 pt shot.
Sure, it would be great if every player on the team was a good 3pt shooter. Some players just don't have the skill to shoot 3s. After watching Landry all of last season, he doesn't look to me to have that ability, no matter how much he practices. Yao Ming is a far better shooter (with more range) than Landry ever will be and you will never see Yao become a 3pt shooter.
And, if Landry can't play in the paint, what is his value? He is a PF. He is not a guard or even a SF. 99% of what made Landry the talk of the town last season was his aggressiveness and finishing ability around the rim. I didn't say he should be posting up, necessarily. I said that his game is in the paint. In other words, he is not an outside shooter. If anything, it would be nice for him to complement his inside play with the ability to knock down 12-15 footers. My guess is that Landry will take under 10 3pt shots during his entire professional career. It is not part of his game.
You know, I would take that bet, if Landry has anything like a decent career. I know another player who didn't have the 3 as part of his game. The guy, who was pretty good, really, and played for a team you might be familiar with, attempted 122 of them during his stay in the NBA. Can you guess who it was?
