Shane is perfect for the Rockets because he does everything that needs to be done. And stays away from the things that piss Winning away. He doesn't ball hog or comit consistent turnovers.

Shane does not need the ball in his hands to affect a game. And that is the perefect compliment for a team with McGrady and Yao. And in substitution of Yao's shooting while he is injured; Alston shooting so much!!

I'm sure that Roy will be an all-star; but he will need guys like "Shane Battier" next to him to be a contender for an NBA Title!!!!

    Recipe for NBA Suceess is:

Superstar(s) + Capable Role Players + Coach + Luck = NBA Success (title)

    Do we have the fit?
    Yao/McGrady + Battier/Howard/Head/Mutumbo/Wells/Alston/Hayes + Van Gundy + "LUCK" = 2007 NBA TITLE

The better the team, the greater Battier's value is.

Shane's contribution's are magnified when each possession means so much more.

This guy is a team leader without putting up big stats.

Battier gives us what we need.

Why are we talking about the impossible? So many real things that are worthwhile to talk about!

Its more like Shane to Tmac to Yao is alot like Pippen to Jordan to Rodman. 2 Solid Scorers and Very solid Defenders, with 1 guy who has all the intangibles. Rodman could take a charge as good as anyone and get anyone off their game (what he did to Malone over and over). Battier has similar characteristics, not the rebounding of Rodman but IMO a better overall defender.

No, the Rox had a chance to get Alexander Johnson instead Lior Eliyahu (or however you spell it). I like Johnson, that Lior kid better turn out to be one heck of a player, because if I recall correctly, Johnson worked out for the Rox and we apparently loved the guy, but still took the other player.

There was no way we weren't taking Novak, not after last season when our team couldn't throw it in the ocean.

You know what's funny about all this now, is remembering all those people who were spitting blood because JVG caused us to win in Denver last year, thus screwing up our draft position.

I guess you always want whatever appears to be the best situation (ie as high a draft position as possible if not making the playoffs) at the time, but sometimes you have to make your own luck. That's what CD (and Morey, I am guessing) have managed to do for us. Stealing another team's previously 'untouchable' player in exchange for a weak-draft first-rounder and Swift, and with as well as Battier has played for us- well, we are on the brink of having the 3rd-best record in the entire NBA, while Memphis has the worst record in the league.

Just imagine if we had lost that game in Denver last year, the one that everyone was screaming about at the time.. We would have ended up with Roy, most likely, but with no Shane, where would we be right now (especially with Yao out)? Probably talking about hopefully trying to sneak into the playoffs again..

Guess there is a reason why you should always try to win every game, no matter the circumstances.. ;)

I prefer Shane now becuase he's the perfect fit for this club. The Rox would also probably prefer Shane now, however they had a major jones for Roy at draft night so I am positive they would have taken him

Roy will bring the thrid scoring option to Rockets, he can play the backup point guard when Rafer is out, which is a sore spot for Rockets now; He has defended most SG in the league fairly well; He also bring a lot of intangibles like Shane to the team; We will still have Swift who can plug into center position better than Hayes now.

Not saying Roy is better than Shane, but I just don't totally agree that we will be a lot worse than we are right now...

Actually we could have gotten either instead of attaining the rights to Lior Elyahu Sp??, the kid from Israel. Johnson was picked with the next pick.

    :(

I was so pissed about that trade - and I couldn't have been more wrong. I was stupid, stupid, stupid. Shane Battier is a champ. He's smart. He's hard-working. He's a great guy on and off the court. You just can't put a price tag on all the things that make him valuable. I love him and I hope he finishes his career in Houston.

God. I was stupid. Carroll Dawson > me.

Basically I think this is true of most people. I thought same thing, because if you don't watch him you have 0 appriciation for what he does. We look at 10/5/3/1/1 and think man we gave up a POSSIBLE future superstar for this barely average player, but once watching him you realize his intangibles and Bball IQ are GREAT. He is a very good, VERY UNDERRATED NBA player. I am NOW happy we got him. Hey I wanted Gay as much as the next guy, but I am not afraid to admit I was dead wrong, Battier is a perfect fit.

I hated getting Rudy Gay... and my initial reaction moments later when he was traded was one that was even more negative. But after a couple of hours cooling off I decided to think about what just happened. I read up and Battier and asked friends about him and I became really excited about getting him. I was still unsure but I was hopeful, I became even more hopeful when he made Team USA as the intangibles guy. But the way he has played for our team has been amazing. He has given us everything we've needed and then some. You truly cannot look at Shane's stats and get an idea of the kind of player he is. He's a leader, an top defender in the league who can get any guy off his game (and he is largely the reason our defense is so great this year), can hit the shots we need him to hit when we need them to be hit, and he has the ability to change the flow of a game without having to score.

Roy would probably be nice in a couple of years (and that's no sure thing) but what we need now, and for the next 5 years on our championship runs, will be a 3rd man who can do it all. I say we just get a young up and comer through the 1st and 2nd rounds of the draft over the next few years, and develop the young talent we have now. No reason to look back now really, we just have to focus on keeping our team young through the draft over the next several years and let our veterans mentor them and do what it is they do. The team we have now is the team we need, we don't need some young top 10 prospect starting at the PG spot or working his way into starting.

Thank God we have Battier and not Gay or Roy. With them and not Battier we'd probably just be talking about squeeking back into the playoffs again, as some poster said, and our defense wouldn't be nearly as fierce. Battier does more for this team than any young, inexperienced star could.
